championship today threatened to walk out on the second match with title-holder Boris Spassky unless all television cameras are removed from the hall Fischer's demands were presented by Fred Cramer a vice president of the US Chess Federation at a closed meeting with representatives of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) the Icelandic organizers and representatives of US companies owning the television rights to the match international chess sources said The referee of the match Germany's Lothar Schmid said Fischer will lose the second game by default if he does not turn up for the scheduled 5 pm (1 pm EDT) start today BvAL PEARCE Staff Writer In a world absent of silence sounds become particularly important Different noises effect different people in different ways The sound of a fire engine will excite the blood of a retired fireman a particular song will touch the heart of a romanticist But it's doubtful if any sound is as demanding as the whine of a Ashing reel And have you ever noticed that the whine of a reel varies with the uigency of the situation It has a soft gentle whine for little Ash for medium-sized Ash it raises its voice an octave or two and for big ones Well when the lunkers hit there is no ignoring the cacauphonous scream emitted by a demanding reeL The sounds of reels whining come close enough together at Salton Sea to warrant a study of the variation in pitch This columnist was Ashing there Wednesday with Frank Martin owner of the and Tackle Shop at North Shore his wife and Bruce Olafson patrol boat skipper for the county of Imperial Things had been rather slow as they frequently are at the Sea for sometime The boredom of sitting on an idle boat was alleviated only rarely by a soft gentle whine that did reach towards the soul of the rod owner but failed to stir up much more than the normal amount of adrenalin The sun was doing its deal-level best to discourage even the heartiest angler and just about succeeding when of a sudden Olafson's rod whined gently As the owner reached for it the whine turned into a gentle roar then a demandhng scream It was that sound all anglers wait a lifetime to hear a Olafson shouted as he manipulated the rod in an effort to turn the corvina And it was a Ash We weighed it later after it had evaporated somewhat and watched the needle on the scales quickly jump to 20 and three quarters pounds During the trip out of Red Hill Landing the boat took three other Ash that weighed in at more than 12 pounds but they were dwarfed beside the giant Martin who probably knows the Salton Sea about as well as anyone has gone to great lengths to set up a communications system around the Sea that makes it possible for him to know at all times where the Ash are hitting the hardest and fastest This type of a communication set up is particularly important at the Sea Anyone who has Ashed this inland body of water is well acquainted with the temperament of the corvina This temperament combined with the peculiarities of the sea itself generally creates what is generally deAned as spotty Ashing That is anglers in one area may be limiting out while fisherman elsewhere are starving Now because Martin took the time those hot areas are always in the limelight however it must be admitted that at the Sea an area that is hot at sun up can be colder than last night's steak by noon Martin says the corvina are now in the midst of their spawning run and are especially vulnerable to a well delivered croaker The need for croakers adds a little variety to fishing at the Sea The angler must first And a school of these fish and catch a few There is no other way Croaker are generally abundant just outside the jetties at Red Hill landing or in the trees out a ways from the jetties Martin has devised a special rig for handling croaker which he calls a similar to the terminal tackle used for halibut but is made up of wire core leader Basically a single hook trailing a treble The croaker is hooked through the top side with the single hook and the treble is hooked into flesh towards the tail There is some division of opinion as to why corvina are easily caught during spawning efforts with croaker Martin thinks the corvina is actually attacking the croaker to run it away from the spawning grounds This means the corvina hit quickly and are often gone just as quickly particularly when they are not hungry In this case the angler must be prepared to set the hook immediately rather than let the fish run as is generally the case with other type baits Martin thinks the fishing at the Sea will continue to improve and become especially good this fall He bases his conclusion on the fabt that this is the flrst year corvina have spawned this early in the season in several years a good sign" Martin says Ash are active and the Ashing is going to be Rosenbloom Buys Rams Before stomping out of the hall he reached over to shake Spassky's hand Fischer obviously was upset but Cramer who is a member of the American's camp said "he is a pro and this is part of the pme I believe he has got enough to come back in the match After all there are 23 possible games Fischer locked himself into his hotel suite with his second Father William Lombardy a Catholic priest who is a grandmaster to analyze the lost game and prepare for encounter The challenger lost the first game at the 29th move when in taking one of pawns he allowed his bishop to be trapped By doing this he in effect exchanged one bishop for two an action which favored the champion Although Fischer made a desperate attempt to turn the pme into a draw it became obvious that Spassky could not be kept from promoting a pawn to a queen thus making an eventual checkmate a certainty THEY'RE DIGGIN' ALL OVER THE PLACE SO COME-CASH-IN Schmid also said organizers will not keep spectators from the first two rows of seats in the hall as they did during the first game on request The 29-year-old New Yorker walked out for 35 minutes Wednesday to protest two television cameras hidden above the stage where the players sit at the chess board for their championship match scheduled to run a maximum of 24 games Although he went into the much-postponed first game a heavy favorite Fischer made what appeared to be a error and went down to defeat at the hands of the 35-year-old Soviet world chair pion The moment of truth was painful Fischer rose from the massive mahogany chess table made a helpless gesture and resigned at the 50th move an 84-76 win over Youth Center John Holland scored 21 and Scott Hall 19 for Atajo The win pushed Atajo into a second place tie with Spa Plumbing in the NBA Division with 0-2 records The Plumbers lost their second pme of the season falling to the Indio Elks 56-50 Indio Squire Men's Shop is on top at 6-1 Charley Williams bucketed 30 points for Youth Center while Carl Brenaugh scored 18 and Sonny Layson 14 PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -The Los' Angeles Dodgers are victims of the times a skyjacking After pounding out 18 hits for a 9-5 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday night the Dodgers found out they had to spend an extra night here The plane was kept on the ground because of airport security precautions after two armed men commandeered a Miami-to-New York National Airlines jetliner and ordered it to land at Philadelphia The Dodgers will return to Los Angeles today an offday and open a nine-game homestand against the Montreal Expos Friday night The Dodgers mounted their-18-hit attack against five Philadelphia pitchers to get a split in a four-game series with the Phillies and complete a 13-game road trip with a 6-7 record Remaining six games back of Cincinnati in the National League West Los Angeles provided Tommy John with his eighth win against four losses John went the distance although he was touched for 13 hits abrbM abrbM Lacy lb 9 1X1 Iowa till Hata I 1 1 1 1 Harnoa ft 1111 Danacf 1111 Meaty HIM Patter lb i 1 1 Jotamo lb 1111 Bacfcntr it i 1
