4E Sun-Sentinel. Wednesday. March 31. 1993 Worst supporting telecast? The Oscars What was the difference between last summer's national political conventions and Monday night's Oscar telecast? There were fewer speeches and more entertainment at the conventions. Maybe it's time ABC started covering Oscar night the way it does the conventions. Can the gavel-to-gavel coverage. Monitor what's going on, and when the Academy finally gets around to something interesting, cut away from regular programming. ., As it is, the only reason other than marking office pools that the audience sits through the cavalcade of Live Action Short Subject, Animated Short Subject, Cinematography, Foreign Film, Costume Design, Makeup, Screenplay Adapted From Another Medium and Original Screenplay is out of fear that it will miss something signficant. There's no real threat of this, of course. The Oscarcast pattern is well-established and hasn't been deviated from in years. The supporting actor and actress nominees are presented during the "first hour with no further awards lot consequence until almost TOM JICHA TVRadio Writer A J midnight. Best Actor, Best Director and Best Picture are then squeezed into less time than it took for the woman with the anti-U.S. short subject on Panama to drone on about what a horrible, repressive country America is. On American TV, of course. Even Billy Crystal seemed bored. The comedianactor has kept the often-deadly process lively in recent years but he must have run out of "A" material. An encore by Crystal next year is less likely than an Oscar for Traci Lords. The idea to make the theme "Women in Film" was politically superlative. Obviously Geena Davis, who fronted the highlights reel, didn't see the irony of appearing in a cleavage-exploding gown from the Madonna collection. It wouldn't have been any more inappropriate to have Jaye Davidson host this segment. By the time Richard Gere went into his spiel about a billion Chinese watching, there was an expectation that he was going to point out "and every one of them has a woman as a mother." There was one breakthrough. Violet lapel ribbons were displayed for the first time. Doesn't the first performer to sport a new hue owe an explanation of its significance to the uninformed? If not, what is the point? Supposedly, the new color is a protest of violence against women. Logically, the next in the line should be black and blue, a statement against personal violence, period. Better yet, someone should sport the NBC peacock rainbow as a reminder there is something else to watch on Oscar night. Truth is, it wouldn't make a difference. People complain about the show the morning after every Os car night, vowing never again. But like the buzzards to Hinkley, Ohio, they flock back the following year. Me, too. Soper gets the job WCIX-Ch. 6 has formally named Bob Soper its 4 p.m. co-anchor. Soper has been co-anchoring WCIX's first afternoon newscast since last fall, when Ken Matz left to take a job at the CBS-owned station in Philadelphia. Until Tuesday, Soper's official status had been interim anchor. WCIX also announced that it has taken another step to help noncable homes in Broward pick up its signal. The station has received permission to transmit its signal on UHF Channel 55. This should be especially useful to homes in the northwest communities of Coral Springs, Margate, Lauderdale Lakes, Tamarac and Plantation. WCIX will provide UHF indoor loop antennas free for anyone in those areas, or in the northeast Broward sections served by UHF Channel 27. For information, call 1-305-968-9711. VIEWING TIP 'Homicide' may be in the street This is your last chance for this season at least to catch one of the finer new drama series. Homicide: Life in the Street reaches the end of its limited run at 9 p.m. on WTVJ-Ch. 4 and WPTV-Ch. 5. If it happens to return next season, it will be solely because of NBC's faith in it. Ratings haven't been good. Tonight the cops cope with an unseasonal heat wave, a Santa Claus who takes off an unscheduled series of rounds and a depressing discovery. - TOM JICHA EVENING HIGHLIGHTS 7:30 p.m. (sun) Collage Baseball Central Florida at Miami.
