Sun-Sentinel, Monday, April 19, 1993 Turgut Ozal, 66, president of Turkey Combative, pugnacious and provocative to the last, President Turgut Ozal of Turkey died in his Ankara home on Saturday. He was 66. Officials said I he died of heart failure and suggested that his death might have been hastened by a grueling 12-day tour of Central Asia that ended two days earlier. The five-country tour was designed to show support for neighboring Azerbaijan, which is ethnically close to Turkey, in its conflict with Armenia. President Ozal had undergone triple-bypass heart surgery in the United States in 1987 and survived an assassination attempt a year later.

He had been free of known heart problems since then. A squat, bespectacled and irascible figure, President Ozal left a deep mark on Turkey's modern history. In 1990, he showed no hesitation in committing his predominantly Muslim country, a member of the NATO alliance, to the U.S.-led coalition against Iraq in the Persian Gulf War. Sensing his party's imminent political decline, he had himself elected president so he could retain high office after his party's 1991 election defeat by Demirel and his allies.
