When the California Angels signed 29-year-old Mark Eichhorn as a free agent last December, it was with the hope that he might contribute as a long reliever this season. But if his first two appearances are any indication, Eichhorn might share the role of stopper with Bryan Harvey or take over the role himself. Eichhorn retired seven of the eight batters he faced Thursday night to pick up his second save as the Angels beat the Minnesota Twins 3-1. "I'm not looking for a particular role," said Eichhorn, who suddenly has become a threat to the status of Harvey, the Angels' No. 1 short reliever.

"I didn't even expect to be on the club. I'm just happy I'm throwing the ball well, and I'm ready to go when they call me." Eichhorn entered Thursday night's game in the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded, two outs and the Angels leading 2-1. He induced Randy Bush to ground to second and held the Twins to one baserunner in the final two innings. "Eichhorn is going to be a big part of the ballclub, and so is Bryan Harvey," said Angels manager Doug Rader, whose team has won its last three games after losing the season-opener to Seattle. "To compete well for six months, everyone must contribute.

"With the job he did his last couple of times out, he deserved the opportunity for another save." Kirk McCaskill (1-0) was the winning pitcher, allowing just three hits and the only Minnesota run in six innings of work. Eichhorn came on after Greg Minton allowed the Twins to load the ai i pm I At apt 17" I 14" 3 PM $10.04 DARK NOW I 4 PM S.9S AT 15 P.M. All three of the Angels' runs two in the second inning and the other in the eighth were unearned because of two errors by Minnesota third baseman Gary Gaetti.

Minnesota ended a streak of 22 consecutive scoreless innings by California pitchers when Kent Hrbek walked to lead off the second, took third on Brian Harper's one-out single and scored on Gene Larkin's sacrifice fly. The Angels went ahead for good in their half of the second off losing pitcher David West (0-1). Dante Bichette doubled to right-center with two outs and scored when rookie John Orton's routine grounder skipped through Gaetti's legs. Orton scored on Howell's first hit, a single to left.
