What Fort Lauderdale lacked was middle relief, and what the Miracle showed was a refusal to quit.

Trailing 9-1 entering the seventh, Pompano knocked out Fort Lauderdale starter Mark Ohlms (1-0) with two doubles and a single, then clobbered reliever John Bru-baker for three hits and two runs. Victor Garcia closed the inning by striking out Dennis Kidd, but Fort Lauderdale's lead, once safe at eight runs, had shrunk to three. For Pompano, designated hitter Marc Giordano, a Piper High graduate, was 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, and Cardinal Gibbons graduate Marty Durkin was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Starter Anthony Kelley (0-1), who pitched at Triple-A Tucson last season, got the loss, giving up three earned runs and six hits in four innings. boat care CENTERS Help us celebrate the opening of our FOURTH super store for all things marine MONDAY APRIL 9th Matinee itasW" Accessories Pfi4 SuDDlies By CHRIS LAZZARINO Staff Writer FORT LAUDERDALE With a gentle breeze keeping a cloudless Friday evening pleasantly cool, the Fort Lauderdale Yankees were perfectly hot.

That is until a late swoon that nearly cost them their first game of the season. The Yankees who had to wait to take possession of Fort Lauderdale Stadium until two hours before the start of their Class A Florida State League season Friday when the New York Yankees finished their packing and headed north slipped past the Pompano Beach Miracle 9-7 before a crowd of 1,019. The good news for Fort Lauderdale fans is that their newest Yanks, 16-2 during spring training in Tampa, sprayed line drives at will, showing the aggressiveness that was sorely missed during last year's rare season. First baseman Todd Devereaux, showing the sort of power last seen from a Fort Lauderdale first baseman when Kevin Maas (now at Triple-A Columbus) hit .278 with 11 home runs and 73 RBI in 1987, went 4 for 5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Also for the Yankees, designated hitter Skip Nelloms sent a ball into the right-field bleachers for a solo home run in the fourth inning; leadoff hitter Rich Barnwell, who had a triple in the sixth, reached base and scored three times in four at-bats; and clean-up hitter Jay Knoblaugh tripled in the third and drove in a run in the fifth.

Defensively, Gerald Williams may prove to be the best center fielder in Fort Lauderdale since Roberto Kelly played there in 1985. Williams retired the side in the fourth, including a one-handed oyer-the-shoulder catch on the run for the third out. Second baseman Ray Noriega, formerly of the University of Miami, was smooth all evening with five putouts and the front end of a More than 8,000 items in stock For Boats'! 0' and up Power or Sail! The Expos looked ready to administer a beating early, with Matt Stairs' three-run double capping a two-out first-inning rally that gave them a 4-0 lead. Rob Fletcher and Adam Terris had back-to-back singles before Rogers walked a pair and Stairs (3 for 3) looped a shot over the head of center fielder Loy McBride. Expos starter David Wainhouse (0-1) retired the first six batters he faced, then got himself out of a jam in the third. After issuing a pair of walks, Wainhouse struck leadoff hitter McBride with a pitch to load the bases with one out.

Doug Sanders drove in a run with a single to make it 4-1. The Eastern Division champion Mets, trailing 4-0 after the first inning, stole a club-record 11 bases in 1 1 attempts on the way to their first victory in three consecutive season openers at West Palm Beach. Nicko Riesgo's towering two-run homer in the seventh off Expos reliever Bret Davis gave the Mets an 8-4 lead and decided the issue.
