She was 71. "She decided a law degree might aid her dreams to help people who couldn't afford to help themselves, and she had the smarts to do it." said Mrs. Faiks' son, Kobert Faiks, of Temple Terrace, near Tampa.

"She was a very warm person who was out to help everybody." Mrs. Faiks was a strong proponent of the Equal Rights Amendment and also joined pro-choice marchers in Tallahassee when Gov. Bob Martinez convened a special session of the Legislature in October to consider restrictions on abortion. It was her strong interest in issues involving women's rights that motivated Mrs. Faiks, a resident of Coconut Creek, to run three times for the state House of Representatives, in 1978, 1982 and 1984, her son said.

She moved to Tallahassee in 1964 when her husband, retired U.S. Army Col. Walter Faiks, left the military. Mrs. Faiks moved with her husband to Fort Lauderdale in 1965.She enrolled at Nova University in 1974 and got her law degree in 1977.
