The other is a paid obituary, which allows families to publish extended obituary information of their choice. Death notices and paid obituaries appear in sans serif type that looks like this. Obituaries prepared by our staff as news stories appear in the same type as other stories in the paper, like this.

The cost for Paid Obituaries is $2.50 per line. Families may publish a photograph to go with the death notice or paid obituary. A half-column photo is $25; a full-column photo is $40. Obituaries can be submitted in person at the main office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

On the weekend, the hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m. Faxed obituaries are accepted until 5:30 p.m. any day of the week. The obituary writer may be reached in person or by voice mail at 247- 4620 between the hours of noon and 8 p.m. Carmen R.

Crebar NEWPORT NEWS Carmen R. Crebar, 88, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at his home. A native of Fairmont, W.Va., he had been a Newport News resident for nearly 50 years. Mr. Crebar retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as a crane operator after 40 years of service.

He was a member of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and an avid bowler. He was a very active member of the Moose Lodge, where he was past president, having served three terms. Mr. Crebar was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Wells Crebar; a son, Carl Crebar, and his wife, Kathy, of Mountain View, and four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, July 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Mount Carmel Catholic Church, followed by a funeral Mass by the Rev. Timothy E. Keeney. A burial service will be held 10 a.m.

Friday, July 31, in Peninsula Memorial Park. Lucy P. Evans HAYES Lucy Pearl Evans, age 77, died at her home on July 28, 1998. She was of the Protestant faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Albert V. Evans.

She is survived by her three daughters, Audrey Rock, Priscilla Bristow and Faye Dutton; two sons, Leonard Jenkins and Wray Evans; two sisters, Hazel Glasco and Eva Mosley; and two brothers, Jack West and Ellis West. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. Gusack WILLIAMSBURG Lila L. Schaefer Gusack, 64, died Saturday morning, July 25, 1998, at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge, following a lengthy illness. She was born to Joseph J. and Mabel May Tackman Schaefer Sr. on Feb.

1, 1934, in Essexville. Lila was a retired LPN, a member of St. Bede's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, and Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, Woodbridge. On Oct. 5, 1957, she married James A.

Gusack, and he survives her, along with two daughters, Annette (Kevin) Degnan and Lisa (Timothy) Ralston, both of Woodbridge; one son, Christopher Gusack of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Cecelia (Armond) Beiser of Bay City, Alice (Edwin) Geiersbach of Oak Grove, Luella (Richard) Walther of Essexville, Alfred (Madilyn) Schaefer and Ursula (James) Reo, both of Essexville, Harmond (Sandra) Schaefer Bay City, Shirley Schaefer of Horton, Bertrand (Virginia) Schaefer of Linwood, and Eugene (Pamela) Schaefer of Essexville. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Joseph Schaefer. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated Thursday, July 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Bay City, Mich.

Trahan Funeral Home, Bay City, Mich. Donald R. Hehl WILLIAMSBURG Donald R. Hehl, 81, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at Williamsburg Community Hospital. He had been a lifelong Peninsula resident.

Mr. Hehl retired from Akers Beverage Co. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 1119 and the Hampton Elks Lodge No. 366 and served as a volunteer for the Wythe Rescue Squad.

Mr. Hehl was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Andrews Hehl. Survivors include his daughter, Jacqueline Teagle, and her husband, Ellis Wray, of Newport News; two granddaughters, Donna Street, and her husband, Danny, and Diane Harrah, and her husband, Eddie; his sister, Adelle Kautz of Ashland; a brother-in-law, Grady Andrews, and his wife, Brownie, of Williamsburg; five-great grandchildren, Caroline, Jacob, Benjamin, Stephen and Rachel; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, in Peninsula Memorial Park by Dr.

Leslie S. Reynolds BATTERY PARK Leslie Scott Reynolds, age 78, of 20525 Todd died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at her home. She was a native of Battery Park and a housewife. Mrs. Reynolds was a member of Battery Park Baptist Church and the Sunday School Class; Col.

William Allen Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; United Daughters of the Confederacy, Isle, of Wight Chapter; and the Woman's Club of Smithfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Parker Reynolds; and her parents, Junious Walter Scott Jr. and Virginia Turner Scott. Survivors include two sons, Alvin Jack L.

Reynolds, and his wife, Cora Lynn, of Smithfield; five sisters, Alice S. Carter of Battery Park, Ella S. Keith of Newport News, Twyla S. Gullett of Williamsburg; Clara S. Foster of Franklin and Violet S.

Barlow of Smithfield; one brother, J. Parker Scott of Rescue; special friend, Rosa Davis of Smithfield; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at Battery Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe A.

Olson and the Rev. R. Wendell Sodergren officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Smithfield.

Richardson Sr. WILLIAMSBURG Archie C. Richardson 65, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998. He is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Johnny Crump and Donna and Benard Rose; a son and daughterin-law, Archie Jr. and Barbara Richardson, all of James City County; two sisters, Ida Hopkins of Bristol and Gunnie Redman of Maryland; two brothers, Roland Richardson of Norfolk and Robert Richardson of Fresno, 13 grandchildren, Jason, Joey, Jeremy and Crissy Crump, Tanya, Archie III, Shawn and Jessica Richardson, and Bridgette, Kelley, Bernie, Karen and Travis Rose; and one great-grandchild, Brittani Crump.

Dennis W. Rowe DELTAVILLE Capt. Ray Serret, age 46, husband of Lily Serret, who loved him with all of her being, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 22, 1998. He leaves behind his mother, Rafaela Serret; two brothers, Jimmy and Ozzie; and three sisters, Laura, Debbie and Felita; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his labs, Delta and Yankee.

A native of New York, he had been a Peninsula resident since 1936. Mr. Clark retired in 1984 from Newport News Shipbuilding as a senior estimating engineer after 45 years of service. He was a 1939 graduate of the University of Virginia and was a member of the Kappa Alpha order. He was preceded in death by his son, James Sherwood Clark, in 1949.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma G. Clark; his stepson, Ronald J. Waynick of Virginia Beach; his brother, E.W. Clark of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; two step R. Jeffery Waynick Jr.

Feiler, an engineer who helped billionaire Howard Hughes design the Spruce Goose, the huge wooden aircraft, died July 7 of a heart attack. He was 77. He designed hydraulic systems for the ailerons of the aircraft, which was the world's biggest airplane for years with an eight-story-tall tail and 320-foot wingspan. Hughes flew the plane only once, for 70 seconds, on Nov.

Mrs. Carter, a native of Wythe County, spent her youth in Wytheville. She lived most of her adult life in the Tidewater area and had been a resident of the Greenville area for the past six years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip E. Carter who died in 1988.
