Wally Backman and Bobby Bonilla had three hits apiece as the Pirates had 13 in handing the Cubs only their fourth loss in 15 games. The Pirates, who moved into a tie when the New York Mets lost to Montreal, had lost four of their previous five games.

Bream's homer off Shawn Boskie (4-6) came in the second inning after Barry Bonds reached on an error by shortstop Shawon Dunson. The homer, Bream's 10th, gave Bob Walk a 3-0 lead. But Walk left the game in the bottom of the inning when he bruised the middle finger of his right pitching hand attempting to field Dave Clark's smash. Walk threw wild to first for an error and left the game. Patterson (7-3) came on to pitch five innings, allowing six hits and striking out two.

The Cubs scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Girardi, off Patterson in the second. Expos 7, Mets 4 MONTREAL Andres Galarraga hit Montreal's first inside-the-park homer in three years and Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd allowed two runs "and stranded five runners in scoring position in six innings as the Expos defeated New York. Boyd (6-3) allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked two, and has lost just once in his last 16 starts. Since losing to Cincinnati on April 28, Boyd has five wins, a loss and 10 no-decisions. Special to the Sun-Sentinel WEST PALM BEACH -Greg Fulton's two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the West Palm Beach Expos a 4-3 victory over the Osceola Astros Tuesday night in the Florida State League. Fulton hit the home run on a 2-2 fastball from reliever Gabriel Rodriguez (7-4). The Expos were down 3-0 going into the ninth, but scored four runs, two on a single by Rod Boddie, who is playing his last game.

He will be attending law school at the University of Virginia. Pete Young (8-3) picked up the victory in relief, allowing one hit in one inning. Dan Freed started and went 7V innings, allowing three runs while striking out five. West Palm Beach will start an eight-game road trip at Sarasota tonight. West Palm Beach needs to win 26 of its last 32 games to break PITTSBURGH PIRATES The Pirates continue to thrive on bullpen by committee.
