This ralsei an interesting question In connection with our metallic money. Whatever tbo soundness or unsoundness ol the position, the fact remains that one of the most eminent of the Republican Senators, and an enemy of tbe Bland Silver bill, denounces the demonetiza- tion of silver by Republican Congress as unconstitutional.

St. Loula Republican: Tbe mere that so many people can found -who think contraction, must be an incident of resumption in silver, and that a large number of people think they must oppose resumption in silver Just as hotly aB they do resumption in gold, ehows bow much ignorance there is. of '-he crave change in our financial situation the Bland bill -wilUoccasion. Contraction as an accompaniment of resumption has had but one purpose, to increase value of the greenback so ai to bring it to par with gold, or so near to par with gold that When the time arrived for tho government to redeem iti promise to pay a gold dollar whenever the piece of paper called a greenback dollar should bo presented, very few of theso paper would be presented. If the povernment could havo accumulated a fund of gold by the 1st of January, 1879, equal to the whole volume of greenbacks outstanding, contraction would never have been a feature of resumption, even if greenbacks were worth to day 00 Cents instead of 98 cents in -cola, and ibeir aggregate amount twice what it is.

But resumption was resolved on in 1876 when gold was werth from to 17 cents more than greenbacks, and it -was plain that if something was not done to bring their values more together, everybody would -want to get gold (or greenbacks when the redemption was begun, so as to make the 11 to 17 cents profit. Hence contraction, which by decreasing the number of greenbacks and increasing the demand, has, with other causes, brought them within two per cent, of gold and four per cent above silver. Is it not plain that contraction, has no part to play in silver resumption, when the promise is already worth moretht-n on a tributary of Hubbard'screek, In Callahan county. A brief scrutiny of Western newspapers, of either party, will convince him of the hopelessness of his ttek as he.explains it. Mr.

That was the dollar which Congress set aside; that is tbe dollar which Congress roust restore. Nothing else w'ill please the promoters of the agitation which Republican leaders who confound cunning with statesmanship are anxious to turn to their own account.

They must concede everything or the sacrifice of principle will be in vain. The silver people in the West are too poworlul to surrender the position they occupy. A veto may baffle them for the moment; but he has stud-, led their devices and 10 little purpose who believes that they may be thus easily turned from tho prosecution of their demands. They want the silver dollar, not thn equivalent of goldbut because it is -less valuable than gold; and for this reason owy they urge that it shall be made an unlimited legal tender for the nations creditors as well as their own. To argue on moral or financial grounds with the demagogues and journalists who hnve made the what it is, and who will keep it as it is, is to waste strength and to intensify their bitterness; Sooner or Inter disaster will overtake them, but in the meantima tbey are not in a mood to listen to the talk about a compromise that would defeat their most- cherished object.
