fast-stepping contest Day and night brought its quota of things to do and things to say and places to go and between times there was the long-distance tele Phone running into the little cottage light outside of Asheville v-'here the eldest son in the presi aential family is established By wireand by radio the happy Convalescent gets first-hand news from family headquarters where Peggy Ann and Herbert III otherwise Peter and tiny baby Joan are having the grandest Christmas conceivable even for fairy book children Meantime the-three kiddles are bringing to the president and the first lady an inexpressible satisfac- tion and enjoyment such as no honor or achievement or preroga tive of White House privilege or prestige could afford First-hand information coming from those in touch with the White House family affairs indicates that there is the merriest sort of holiday atmosphere there The'excitement starting early in the -week gained-in tempo as Christmas day approached All week long hemlock Ih divers sizes and towering shapes moved importantly into tne foreground as Christmas eve approached Every- thing was all set with ribbon decked wreaths in every window laurel and ground pine festoons flauntog from doorways and pillars when the moment came to flood the house anc grounds with the Christmas lights And there is no doubt about It the first lady had a hand in everything even' to the detail of excluding the lovely old-time holly and substituting hemlock and pine and ribbons and as a gesture on behalf of the fast disappearing holly so long ruthlessly beset in the pursuit of
