7-30-21W. This was 88 per cent more than the 695,000 acres reported damaged in the similar November-May period a year earlier, officials said. It is little wonder that so many Oklahomans never give up the idea of returning, once they have moved to other places. They don't want to come lome because the trees are larger, or the rivers are deeper, or ah- is more gentle. There are other reasons. Oklahomans, a hardy people, ant to return to the land as sure as if it were all of the things that other regions may be. They want lo return to the forests or prairies, the rocks or red plains even the heat of summer and cold of winter because somehow we learn to love and almost conquer life on earth.

this patch of Now is a perfect time to renew our relationship with the countryside. Hiking along the back roads can be fun. We can go as far as we want, or poke along as slowly as we feel inclined. Many ranchers, hunters, fishermen, and certain others whose work takes them all over the county, know our country well. However, even these sometimes forget that they move in "ruts." The way out to new vistas may be only a few hours afoot from the edge of where one lives.

Or, try leaving the car in another part of the county while hiking around several miles. While the suggestion will appeal sufficiently to attract only a few, re-discovery may eventually attract others. We live in a wondrous country here, worth slowing to see.
