She found a dove-colored corded silk which copied an old weave. It was $2 a yard, and, since 10 yards were Ire- quired, the total cost was rather staggering. There was old-fashioned ribbon to bought, too, and thread for Jewing, "Twenty-five dollars out of Brown Boy's hide," Kate reflected.

"But it doesn't matter, if only I can make Caroline look right." The following morning Kate cut out the dress, adapting the tight bodice and straight bouffant 'skirt of the original model. Success attended her labors. Though the little upstairs bedroom was distressingly hot, enthusiasm kept her at the sewing machine Until Caroline forcibly took her downstairs to lunch. Afterward they had another fitting, Caroline standing patiently while Kate fashioned the lining to her figure and the dress to the lining. At 4 o'clock Caroline protested, "I can't try on the thing another time.

Fold it and put it away till tomorrow. We're both exhausted. Look! There comes Zeke with the ice. I'll go down and make Iced tea for us." Presently she.called Kate dc-Wft to the dining room, -where she had the tea and tomato sandwiches waiting. "And here's a note Zetee brought from Cynthia.

She's decided to entertain informally for Eve and Morgan tonight. A craay shower. Everybody's supposed to bring 'something discouraging -to Here. Read the letter yourself." 'Tet's go, Caroline!" Kate exclaimed. "I'll take a recipe tot that cheese-cake Morgan's so craay about, if you dare me." "It's a cute idea," Caroline said "But are you sure you want to go, Kate? There's no use persecuting yourself." "I want to go," Kate told her firmly.

"If I'm going to spend the rest of my life in the same set with Morgan and Eve, the sooner 1 get used to them betonging to each other the better." sounded reasonable to Car- olirve, So she did not try to dissuade her. The party, like all of Cynthia's affairs, went off with a bang. was a bowl of champagne punch to start things off, aftd later they opened the gifts. The "discouf agetnehts to divorce" Were varied and riaieulous, ranging from biscuit clitters to lipstick for Eve, and from bedroom slippers to bottles of bourbon for Morgan Kate presented her recipe and managed to do it so gaily, clinging to Johnnie Baird's dependable arm the whilej that no brte remembered to feel sorry for her. Only Eve looked for malice (and perhaps found it) In the little recipe written on the kitchen card and labeled, "Kate Meed's Cheesecake.

A Favorite of Morgan's," Later in the evening Morgan sought out Kate where she was reading palrns in the library and insisted on her dancing wdtfe him. After a moment's hesitation and much protest from her crowd, Kate Went. It was the first time shs danced with him since the breaking of their The strangeness of being in htk arms, yet knowing they were Worlds apart, reduced her to thoughtful silehcfi. She thought, "I used to be thrilled when we danced! I'm not now. It's just like dancing with anybody else.

That's lucky me. He's Eve's--entirely Eve's." Morgan said, "let'S go outside, Kate. It's beastly hot here." She protested weakly, her voice dying in her throat. could think of no reason for refusing. Other couples Were OUtsWe---Eve herself, no doubt--for the radio music Was hardly good enough for They Went outdoors.

The porch was full, and Mbrgan said, taking her arm, "My car's parked out by the garage. We'll go ilt 'ftiere." In the car Morgan did not light a cigaret as she expected him to do. She noticed that morosely silent, hardly answering when she talked. Presently said, "So you've taken up palmistry, have you?" Kate answered, one parlor trick, bon't belittle it," "Just a way of holding hands," he accused. "Don't be silly.

People don't need an excuse for holding hands. They just do it if they want to." "Then let's do it. I'd enjoy Again Kate said, "Don't be silly!" She did not know that he was verging on drunkenness, be- cause his quietness was so deceiving. "It doesn't seem silly to me," he told her with dginity. "I'm sorry it seems so 'to you.

It would be rather heavenly, as I look at it." Katfe was dismayed. Was Morgan actually making love to her? But no! Things like that simply didn't happen. Morgan Was engaged to marry Eve fihvell Sn October and this was a party in their honor. To return to the impersonal, she said, "Aren't the Ghe- naults late in going to Michigan this year? They Used to go the first of July." "Later than usual," Morgan said. "But what does time matter? What does anything matter any more?" laughed a i J.V in the country at preserving time.

I suppose the Elwells will soon be going to Michigan, too. Of course you'll spend August "with them?" "Why do you aslv that 1 "To make conversatfoft," Rate retorted angrily. "You've certainly Contributed very little Of your own accord." "So that's it. I thought maybt my actions interested you." "Oi course your actions interest me," Kate said quickly. "I'll always be interested in you, Morgan.

You've shared too much of my young emotional-life to seem quits like other men to me, ever." "The happiest hours IVe ever known 'were with you, Kate." He leaned toward her and gathered her into a close embrace, kissing her surprised lips, caressing her surprised face. "You're not kissing back, Kate! Don't treat me like this, darling. Don't punish me for the way I've treated you. I want you again. Let's go away from this place! Let's start driving now.

We can be married! in the morning--" Kate pushed him from her, feeling only aversion and amazement. She knew now that her love for him was not a thing held in leash, but something dead and extinct, an old Kate got out ot the ear and closed the door. She went quickly to the house and found Cynthia. Shfe said, "Some strong coffee lot Morgan, Gyn! He's in his ear, out by the garage. Sober him up before Eve finds him.

I'm going home, "Oh," Cynthia said, looking at her Bwittly, "Well, good night, darling, and thank you tot coming. You'll find Caroline on the porch." When they Were nearing homfe Caroline asked, "Sorry you went?" "No," answered Kate. "Glad. 1 tound I don't envy Eve at all. I'vfe Cleaned (To Continued) Tuesday.
