After an atypical week that featured golf outings, banquets, luncheons and anything else that could get in the way of planning for a basketball game, the distractions finally are over for the expansion team. But the work hardly has begun.

"We're; still so far away," he said. "The whole season will be full of new experiences." Rothstein 's first regular-season experience as an NBA coach was a 111-91 loss Saturday night to the Los Angeles Clippers in the Miami Arena. The loss might have been expected, but the shooting percentages weren't. The Clippers, who lost their opener 129-110 to the 76ers Friday night, made 61.6 percent of their shots from the field; Miami 37.1 "I was surprised during the game they shot as well as they did," Rothstein said. "But based on what Philly did to Boston (a 129-115 victory Saturday night), maybe the Clippers' preseason record (5-2) was no fluke.

They were fairly The Heat's offense made them look even more impressive. "I dont think our shot selection is all that bad," Rothstein said. "It's a lack of recognition, the lack of a comfort zone. We're struggling with our confidence. Familiarity with the offense takes time." The Heat gots it biggest offensive boosts from guard Pearl Washington, who scored 16, and forward Sylvester Gray, who had 15.

"It's hard to execute when you're not making shots," Rothstein said. "Any good NBA team gets a lot of scoring individually from its players. Even with structure, you have to have people to go to." When those people are nervous, though, it makes it that much more difficult.

"I think for the most part everyone was excited," starting forward Pat Cummings said. "Even myself, and this was my 10th opener." The Heat today leaves for Dallas, where it will practice in Reunion Arena for Tuesday night's game against the Mavericks. The following night, Miami plays the Spurs in San Antonio. The games will be the first outside the state for the Heat, which played its five exhibitions in Florida. "It will be a new experience going into another NBA arena," Rothstein said.

Richmond scores 17 in debut Sun-Sentinel wire services As the NBA made its way to South Florida Saturday, several South Floridians were having their way in the NBA. Mitch Richmond of Lauderdale Lakes, Derek Harper of West Palm Beach, and Otis Thorpe of Lake Worth turned in exceptional performances.

Richmond, a rookie guard for Golden State, scored 17 points as the Warriors won their season opener 117-104 over the Phoenix Suns. Richmond is formerly of Boyd Anderson High School. Harper scored an off-balance, 20-foot shot with three seconds left in overtime to give the Dallas Mavericks a 114-113 victory over the Houston Rockets. Thorpe scored 18 points and added 12 rebounds for the Rockets. Also, former University of Florida guard Vernon Maxwell scored 10 points as San Antonio beat the Los Angeles Lakers 122-107 in Larry Brown's debut as Spurs coach.

Brown coached at Kansas last season and led the Jayhawks to the NCAA championship. Chris Mullin scored 29 points, including seven straight in a key fourth-quarter spurt, and added 11 rebounds to lead the Golden State victory. It was Don Nelson's coaching debut with the Warriors. Tom Chambers scored 23 points and Kevin Johnson had 20 points and 10 assists for Phoenix. The Suns, who trailed for most of the game, pulled to within five points three times in the final period, the last at 95-90 on Tyrone Cor-bin's free throws with 5:55 remaining.

But Mullin hit four free throws and a 3-point play in the next 61 seconds to clinch the victory. After Harper's field goal, Houston's Sleepy Floyd took the in-bounds pass with :02 left and drove the lane. His shot looked better than Htrper's, but he couldn't get it to fall. "We did a better job of moving the ball in the fourth quarter," Harper said after the Mavericks fought back from a 15-point deficit late in the third quarter to tie the score 103-103 at the end of regulation. Dallas coach John MacLeod said: "86-71 didn't look very bright.

We bounced back and came back strong." "I hope it doesn't take us 15 games to learn how to hold a 15-point lead," Houston guard Allen Leavell lamented. Alvin Robertson and rookie Willie Anderson each scored 30 points to lead San Antonio. The Lakers (1-1) had defeated the Spurs 11 of the last 12 times the teams had met in the regular season. Anderson, a forward from Georgia, scored 12 points in the fourth quarter. Johnny Dawkins added 22 points for San Antonio.

Magic Johnson led the Lakers with 21 points, but failed to score in the final period.
