"Before the game was over, we were already thinking about next week and what that game means to us." That's when Alabama plays at Louisiana State, where a victory would give the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide at least a share of the SEC championship. OXFORD (AP) Fans at Saturday's Louisiana State-Mississippi football game donated more than the expected $50,000 for a health care plan for Ole Miss player Roy Lee "Chuckle" Mullins, who was paralyzed during a game last week. "We will go well beyond our minimum goal," Ole Miss Chancellor Gerald Turner told a halftime news conference. He said final collection figures would not be available until Sunday.

The 6-foot, 170-pound backup defensive back was injured last Saturday when he tackled a Vanderbilt receiver to break up a pass play. He fractured the third, fourth, fifth and sixth vertebrae of his neck when he took a blow on the top of his head. Ole Miss has set up a trust fund to help provide lifetime care for Mullins, and scheduled a donation drive for the game Saturday. Turner said one student collected at least $17,000 on her trip through the record 42,354 fans at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, and $19,000 was collected in a sky box. The best thing about this is the united effort of people from all backgrounds," said Turner, who also predicted the fundraiser would exceed the $150,000 needed to set up a "significant endowment fund" for the 20-year-old Mullins.

Turner said LSU officials donated money and other universities said they would send money for what he called a long-term recovery effort for the injured athlete. Turner said he had talked with officials at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis and was told that Mullins had been able to sit up and listen to part of the game on radio. "He is alert and is aware of the tremendous outpouring of affection."
