Chambers' house lost one wall.

He and his wife, Carole, rode out the tornado in their basement. "We never saw anything. All we heard was the noise," he said. "You could hear everything ripping and tearing, everything flying. It just happened within a minute." On Thursday morning, the weather was soft and warm and the sky was blue, completely different from the night of terror that had preceded it.

Work crews wielding Students David Howison and a representative of the national office of Kappa Alpha also personally interviewed members of the fraternity. Larry Wiese, Kappa Alpha national director, was not available for comment. The 39 active members confessed to some level of involvement in the hazing, which took place between 7 p.m. on March 13 and 7 a.m. on March 14, spokesman Brian Shaw said.

The 10 students who were suspended confessed to direct involvement in serious hazing activities, he said. The action comes one year after instituted a zero-tolerance policy on hazing, which was spurred by letters and phone calls from parents concerned about previous acts of hazing. "The president (John Elrod) called all the presidents of the fraternity houses together last year and put them on notice that hazing would not be tolerated," Shaw said The university declined to identify the suspended students. Hazing at state-supported colleges is a misdemeanor, and those ,4 The Associated Press RICHMOND John and Sheila Giles had tried for seven years to have a baby, and when Jeremiah was born 13 weeks ago, it was the happiest day of their lives, her sister-in-law said. In a fleeting moment Wednesday night, a tornado obliterated the Giles home and took the joy from John Giles' life.

His wife and child lay dead. John Giles was spared because he was 80 yards away at his father-in-law's house, picking up garbage to take to the dump. Giles took shelter inside from the driving rain. When he looked out after the worst of the wind had passed, he saw that his house had disappeared. Only the foundation and the front stairs with their wrought-iron guardrails were left intact.

The brown soil inside the foundation was swept bare, and the rubble that was left of the two-story house and its contents was sprayed into what had been the back yard and the trees beyond it. He looked up and said, 'My house is said Ben Braxton Jr. of Accokeek, Mrs. Giles' brother. "That's when he started calling for Sheila and Jeremy.

Besides John Giles, the only member of the family who survived Accomplice ----4 was their dog Peaches. "He picked up the dog and said, 'Peaches, you're all daddy's got left said Juanita Braxton, Sheila Giles' sister-in-law, who lives just down the road.

Giles was at a sister's house Thursday, and his family said he would not talk to reporters. The twister cut a 10- to 12-mile path through Hanover County, about 25 miles north of Richmond, heading northeast toward Carmel Church in Caroline County, said Bill Sammler, warning coordinating meteorologist at the National Weather Service. He said the tornado touched down at about 7 p.m. and had winds of 150 mph to 200 mph. The tornado slashed a serpentine path of destruction 200 to 300 yards wide, sparing some homes and devastating others.

Mrs. Giles' father's house was barely touched. Even the plastic decorative geese in the front yard were undamaged. Most of the damage in Hanover County stretched along one road, Virginia 738, starting near St. James Baptist Church, where Mrs.

Giles had been baptized and sang in the choir, and continuing on several homes past the Gileses. Hanover County authorities estimated that 35 to 37 houses were damaged. In Caroline County, at least four homes were destroyed, and several others were damaged. Elsewhere in the state, a tornado was reported in Lunenburg County, where the mayor of Ken- in rest stop Baggett's testimony helped convict Carter and Rodriguez, who are now serving prison terms of 44 years and 18 years, respectively. Baggett's lawyer, Rossie Alston asked Hoss to impose a suspended sentence in part because of what he described as Baggett's relatively minor role in the crime and because he testified against Carter.

Baggett has said that he, Carter and Rodriguez set out to rob someone that night but hadn't planned to kill anyone. Baggett also told investigators that all three were using drugs before the shooting and that Carter later made up a rap song about how he killed Durham. Durham, 51, was in a bathroom stall when Rodriguez kicked down the door and Carter told him to hand over his wallet, prosecutors said. Baggett was in a waiting car. According to testimony from the two previous trials, Durham cooperated with the robbers, who took $150, and begged them not to harm him.

Carter shot Durham three times, Baggett and Rodriguez testified. Durham's family found his body sprawled on the bathroom floor. The severe weather also reached as far north as Alexandria, where the weather service said a storm packed winds up to 60 mph.

Joe Chambers, who lives about 1,000 feet away from the Giles home, went out Thursday to assess the damage. "We had been down there a couple weeks ago to give a gift for the baby," Chambers said. "She was a real sweet woman. I wish they 10 suspended for hazing killing receives 7 years chain saws cut and removed trees that had downed power lines and blocked roads. Distraught friends and relatives gathered around the ruins of the Giles home.

A twisted playpen lay in the wreckage near a small yellow, red and blue baby carrier. "It's a good thing that we bestowed love, love, love on Jeremy because we only had him for 13 weeks," said Juanita Braxton. "We only had him for a short time, but we loved him." schools are required to expel violators and report hazing incidents to the local nrosecutor. Rockbridge County Commonwealth's Attorney Gordon Saunders said those requirements do not apply at because it is a private college, and he doubts he will take further action unless the individuals involved complain. The suspensions begin April 15 so the students can finish the second of three terms during the academic year at They will be allowed to return for the third term in spring 1999.

The 20 students who live at the Kappa Alpha fraternity house will be allowed to continue sleeping there, but the fraternity will no longer be allowed to serve meals, host social activities or allow visitors, including other fraternity members. The Kappa Alpha pledges were forced to do pushups, situps and other exercises to the point of exhaustion, to eat beans laced with laxatives and to do acts that were personally degrading, university officials said.

The hazing allegations were brought to light by an anonymous letter left in an envelope on campus security director Michael Young's desk late Monday.
