Press LOCAL Saturday, March 31, 2001 C5 James Don Ronnie Akins HAMPTON Retired U.S. Army Col. James Don Akins died Wednesday, March 28, 2001. A native of Texas, he had spent most of his youth in Abilene. On June 14, 1939, Mr.

Akins enlisted as a private in the 112th Cavalry (Horse) of the Texas National Guard. He had been promoted to platoon sergeant by the time that his unit was called to active service in November 1940 for stationing on the U.S.- a Mexican border in Texas. Having completed Cavalry Officers Candidate School in March 1942, he received a commission of second lieutenant and was assigned to the 4th Recon Squad, 4th Motorized Division, and later to the 34th Recon Squad. In the German campaign, he was a tank company commander in "Task Force Cherry" of the 10th Armored Division. After the war, he had a tour of Fort Knox, and then returned to Germany in June 1946 for assignment to military government duty and later to the U.S.

military liaison mission to the Soviet Army in East Germany during the Berlin During his time in Germany, he met and married Liselotte Seeholzer, his wife of 47 years until her death in December 1994. Col. Akins returned to the United States in 1949 to command A Company of the 56th Amphibious Tank Battalion, stationed on Whidbey Island, and then attended the Army Language School in California. During the Korean War, he served as a staff officer in the 8th Army and in the 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, both in Korea and northern Japan. In 1954, Col.

Akins again returned to the United States for staff duty with the 62nd Tank Battalion, 10th Infantry Division. The next year, the entire division was transferred to Germany, and in 1956, he was given command of the battalion. Selected to reactivate and command the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry, he remained with the unit for two years until being assigned as adviser to Combat Command A of the 49th Armored Division, Texas National Guard. As a result of the Berlin Wall Crisis of 1961, this unit was called to active military service, and Col. Akins was transferred to the newly formed U.S.

Strike Command at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. During his next assignment, one year of language and training in 1964, he was promoted to colonel and then served three years as U.S. Army attache in Lima, Peru. Returning to the United States in 1968, Col. Akins was assigned to the Intelligence Office of the Continental Army Command, Fort Monroe.

At the time of his retirement in June 1971, with 32 years of Army service, he was deputy chief of staff Intelligence, HQ, CONARC. During his military career, Col. Akins received the European Theater and Korean Conflict Campaign Medals, the Bronze Star, the Joint Services Commendation Medal with oakleaf cluster and the Legion of Merit. He held a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University and a master's degree from the College of William and Mary. After retirement, he was a teacher for nine years at Tabb High School, York County.

Col. Akins was preceded in death by his wife, Liselotte Akins, and their son, Gerald Lee Akins. He is survived by his daughter, Marguerita McBride of Vesuvius; his grandson, Jason McBride; two great-granddaughters, Heather and Taylor McBride; a sister, Laverne Alderman of Abilene, Texas; four brothers, Wesley Akins of San Antonio, Gerald Akins of Wichita, Dorman Cozy Akins of Houston and Neal Akins of Fort Worth, Texas. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at R.

Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, in Arlington National Cemetery. Carty was born May 24, 1926, a son of the late Carl R. and Hattie Helbert Carty. He was also preceded in death by his wife, D. Loveline Carty, in 1992. Mr.

Carty retired from the Williamsburg Fire Department in 1991. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and H. Richard Gordon of Williamsburg, and Deborah and the Rev. John Ashley of Woodbridge; four brothers, Carl R. Carty Jr.

of Abingdon, Emory Carty of Castlewood, Harold Carty of Mountain Home, James Carty of Roanoke; and a sister, Emogene Carty of Castlewood. Also surviving are grandchildren, Shawn Gordon' and Angela and her husband, Chuck Satterfield. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, from Smith Memorial Baptist Church. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m.

Campbell NEWPORT NEWS Julia "June" McAfee Campbell, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001. She was a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and had been a Peninsula resident since 1946. Mrs. Campbell was office manager at the Holloman Child Care Center on Todds Lane and was a former employee of BASF. She is survived by her husband, Wendell "Buck" H.

Campbell; a daughter, Kerry S. Johnson and her husband, Andrew of Smithfield; a son, Maj. Robert Campbell of Andersen Air Force Base, Guam; two sisters, Isabel Buzard of Fairmount City, and Terri Artman of York County; and a brother, James McAfee of Florida. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at W.J.

A native of Surry and a Smithfield resident for 70 years, she was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. She worked as a nurse for Dr. Jameson and Dr. Longford until she retired. Mrs.

Minerva S. FarmerCaddle was received into eternal rest. She was the daughter of Mr. Benjamin Farmer Sr. and the late Mrs.

Elizabeth Johnson Ronnie Franklin "Ronald" Campbell, 60, died Thursday, March: 29, 2001, at Riverside Regional Medical Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Amherst County, he was an area resident for the past 48 years. Ronnie retired from the Newport News Shipyard in December 2000 as a painter with 22 years of service. He was a member and past governor of the Warwick Moose Lodge 1711, a member of the Hampton Roads Moose Legion 199 and had attained the Fellowship Degree.

Survivors include his wife of 26 1 years, Mary Parker Campbell of Smithfield; two sons, Dale Coberly of Alliance, N.C., and Wayne Campbell of Newport News; three daughters, Sarah Slaydon of Newport News, Christine Evans of Poquoson and Ginger McMinnis of Mount Pleasant, two brothers, Kent Campbell of Williamsburg and Amos Campbell of Newport News; three sisters, Joyce Campbell of Lowesville, Phyllis Massie of Roseland and Mary Parker of Wicomico; 14 grandchildren, Jason Slaydon, Brian Slaydon, Elizabeth Kay Coberly, Lindsay Fay Coberly, Raychel Cole. Jessica Evans, Sarah Evans, John Franklin McMinnis, Brittany Campbell, Aaron Campbell, Patrick Campbell, Robert Cherry, Bridgette Cherry and Crystal Cherry; and his motherin-law, Dorothy Austin of Newport News. The funeral will be conducted by Dr. William Lockwood, pastor, Colony Friends Church, at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at the Weymouth Funeral Home chapel, with Moose rites conducted by Warwick Moose Lodge 1711.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the services. Interment will be private. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home. Ralph Lee Booth HAMPTON Ralph Lee Booth, 76, died Thursday, March 29, 2001. Born in Princeton, N.C., Mr. Booth had been a Hampton resident since 1946. He retired from the Newport News Shipyard in 1987, after 26 years of service, and was a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Mr. Booth was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Mae Booth, who died March 10, 2001, and is survived by his daughter, Sarah Frances Sullivan of Princeton, N.C.; three sons, Henry Alan Booth of England, Linwood Earl Booth Ward of Chesapeake and Jerry Ward of Smithfield, N.C.; one sister, Elma Langdon of Angier, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, in Parklawn Memorial Park by the Rev. Frank Earwood.

A lifelong resident of Newport News, he is survived by his mother, Beverlyn Camm; his father, Richard L. Travis; his adopted mother, Williana Cain; his sisters, Faith Travis, Starr Travis, Lateace Chandler and Vannetta Cain; his brothers, Donnell Cain and Chris Cain; his IVOR Elizabeth Johnson, 79, a resident of Old Blackwater Road, Ivor, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Williamsburg Community Hospital.
