Ask a Cop Question: How do law-enforcement officers monitor school problems? Answer: We have school resource officers in almost every high school and middle school in the county with the exception of special-education facilities. We have two officers at South Lake and Eustis high schools because of the size of those campuses. Eustis Police Department handles the ninth grade center there, and the Leesburg Police De partment han DANIELS dles Leesburg High School and Oak Park Middle School. We have DARE officers responsible for a number of elementary schools, where they spend half a day every week at each school. We also have three canines two passive drug dogs and one bomb dog assigned full time.

Eight of our positions are funded by the Sheriff's Office, four are funded through federal grants and 11 are funded through Lake County's safe schools budget. If the school resource officers had a department of their own, they would be the fifth-largest department in the county. Lake County Sheriffs Office Capt. Chris Daniels answered today's question.
