turning his head he was amazed at the sight of a snake flying through the tops of the bushes along the roadside Mr Watson being an experienced hunter and dead shot was not so overcome by fright or aston ishment that he could not fire his gun Taking careful and deliberate aim he fired at the monstrosity with a load of birdshot It fell Hastening to the spot Watson found that he had not killed but simply wounded the thing which had somewhat recovered its powers of loco motion and had begun to wriggle away in true serpentine fashion Mr Watson grabbed a forked stick near at hand and succeeded in capturing his prize which is now the wonder of the village of Parks Mr Robert Smith who lives near the ground upon which the snake was killed and who gave this information to the Enquirer says the snake was about eighteen inches in length and near an inch and a half through its thickest part It appeared to be of the black snake va riety and aside from its wings bore no other peculiar marks The wings were attached on each side and about midway of its body and were somewhat of the construction and color of the wings of a This is a true story PENCIL AND SCISSORS Oh don't you remember sweet Alice Ben Bolt? Sweet Alice with hair so brown? She has used a new bleach and now she wears The yellowest hair in town HERE is a suggestion and the city fathers like the assessor can take it for all it is worth Since the front of the court house has been improv ed by the removal of the unsightly iron fence and the addition of the Gill oun tain the good work might be carried farther at small expense and greatly to the advantage of the locality or in stance at least one if not two of those antiquated crooked and ugly trees might be removed and more ornamental ones put in their place Again the grass plots on each side of the walk leading to the entrance of the temple of justice might in some way be protected from the feet of the loafers and kept watered so that the bluegrass would always be beautiful to look upon Two flower beds also might be added to the landscape With these things done the appearance of things in that locality would be brought up seventy five degrees Doctor Shu mate says if the proper authorities will enclose the grass plots with wire netting and the town will furnish the water he will make the flower beds and see that the grass is kept green "I shall never marry until I meet a woman who is my direct op She encouragingly Mr Duller there are num bers of bright intelligent girls right in this Art in Ad vertising SEE said the Dissatisfied Man to the Penciler yesterday morning me as a candidate for the is your plat inquired the scribe ment in the jury eaid he present method is far from that perfect ion which should obtain where the life and liberty of my fellow citizens are put in jeopardy Why should it be necessa ry to scour the country every three months and haul a lot of busy men up here away from their work only to turn half of them loose again because forsooth they have sense enough to pull weeds? My plan is this my brother: I would pass a law that every county should have a standing juiy of twelve men to hold their offices for twelve years I would provide that thise men should be unable to either read or write had never been outside of the county and men noted for their stupidity and ignorance I would provide further that they should be imprisoned during their term of of fice so that their innocent minds might not be contaminated by mingling with the world "With such a state of affairs as this my dear young friend the ends of justice would never be defeated and the original purpose and intention of the present law would be brought to utmost It is not easy to be a widow one must resume all the modesty of girl hood without being allowed to even feign its ignorance de Girar diu THERE is quite a promising crop o' young lawyers in and about Dan ville and they are always on th lookout for a to be told on om of their brothers The crowd isnow guy ing one of the said about a little occur rence of a few days ago He had made speech in a very important case Hehac told the jury with upturned eyes anc tremulous voice with what a sense oi duty and responsibility he ventured to address such an intelligent body of met in defense of his client Never before in all of his practice had he felt to such a high degree the justice of his cause and it seemed a matter of supererogation for him to even state such a simple proposi tion to the gentlemen who had been sworn to try the case according to the law and the evidence and not to be prej udiced by the flimsy arts and wiles of learned brother who has just pre ceded He swam through oceans of eloquence and landed upon the oppo site shore of logic with huge sparks of pent up legal force shooting from his body in every direction Then he thank ed the jury for its attention to bis hum ble efforts and sat down The jury re turned a verdict for the other fellow When court adjourned our young friend got one of the jurymen cornered and questioned him very closely about the secret deliberations which resulted in a conclusion so antagonistic to the law the evidence and the eloquence in the case When the conversation between the juror and the embryonic Blackston was at an end the old juror inquired: might be your name young man? Tears to me I hev seed you else to And then the young man meek and lowly whispered words that were not holy and swore speak not nev ermore Beware of him who meets you with a friendly mien and in the midst of a cordial salutation seeks to avoid your Lavater A well known fashionable Philadel phia tailor declares that as the re sult of many observation that but one man in one hundred has square shoulders that is shoulders of an equal height When Buffalo Bill whose magnificent physique has been the ad miration of two hemispheres was last in this city he was measured for a suit of clothing in this sartorial establishment and when the many mysterious figuris had been called off the craftsman cried out to the clerk: left Colonel Cody indignantly exclaimed that! nothing the mat ter with my And it required considerable argument and measuring demonstrations to convince him that his right shoulder was very considerably higher than the left the explanation be ing found in the fact that in shooting bis right shoulder is lifted much higher than its fellow Traveling salesmen are no ticeably lower in the right shoulder by reason of the fact that they are almost continually carrying heavy packages with the right band In fact neaily all men are lower in the right shoulder but a small minority especially newspaper writers and book keepers are lower in the left shoulder as a result of the posi tion which they assume in writing the support of the right elbow on the desk throwing the right shoulder upward This is not visible in many people when walking the street because careful mer chant tailors remedy the defect by a little extra padding in the shoulder which is the lowest ROLLINGS Hogs are still selling at 5c per pound Born on the 16th inst to the wife of James Lamb a boy Born on the 23rd inst to the wife of Whitlock a girl Your correspondent has been on the sick list for a short time Mrs Serene May wife of James May died on the 21st of September She was a resident of this place Mrs Elizabeth Gibson wife of Wm Gibson who died Sept 18th lived on the North Rolling ork Corn is selling in the field at SI 30 per barrel to be shucked and measured in the field at $150 per barrel Miss Ida Calhoun daughter of Calhoun died on Sept 22od She lived on the North Rolling ork Boyle county Mrs Agnes Whitehouse wife of James Whitehouse died on the 19th if Septem ber She lived at Scrub Grass Boyle county Thomas Kirkland and son of Cisco Ill have been visiting his mother Caro line Kirkland near orkland and sever al other of the boys of Bojle county have returned home from the west on the ex excursion probably to stay This section is waim and dry The tobacco is principally cut which is good the corn crop never better but we are in the midst of a sickly season and never in your recollection were more deaths incur immediate vicinity for the length of time LETTER LIST List of letters advertised in the Dan ville post office for the week ending Swope Maggie Walty Steve Winlock Will (col) Wilson Miss Martha Helm Mrs Ihnily Helm Paul (col) Lawrence Mrs Sam Louis Mr Waren Meaux Sherman Ramsey Mr Rob Reed Nir Mark Robinson Miss Maggie Sept 21 1895 Adams Mr Robt Ballett Miss Annie Barton lion A Blue Miss Annie Brow Miss Mary Cras Alis Craig Mrs etney Davis Nir Henry Daughty Miss Mattie Ruthnger Mr A Dennis Esq Rich Evans Mr Martin Gilbert Miss Annie Golden Esq Petter Wright Miss Bell Persons calling for letters in this list will please say Mahan Awarded Highest Honors air DR CREAM BAKING pwn MOST PERECT MADE A pure Grape Cream of Tartar Powder ree from Ammonia Alum or any other adulterant 40 YEARS THE STANDARD IVE MEN KILLED!
