A Norfolk Tides highlight was introduced with an old clip of Tides manager Rick Dempsey, from his playing days, entertaining fans during a rain delay. Also, Louisville Redbirds outfielder Terry Brad-shaw, a Hampton Roads native, was shown getting a pair of hits intercut with vintage NFL footage of a certain other guy by the same name. DIRTY LAUNDRY. The independent Prairie League has suspended Mitch Zwolensky manager of the Minot Mallards for the rest of the season after he held up a game because his team's uniforms were still damp after being laundered.

On July 2, Minot was scheduled to play a doubleheader in Regina, Saskatchewan, but Zwolensky who had been ejected the night before requested a delay in the starting time because his team's uniforms were still wet when they arrived from the laundry less than a half-hour before the game. He was granted an extra 20 minutes, but when he asked for still more time the discussion turned into a heated argument and another ejection. Zwolensky attempted to pull his team off the field, but the game was eventually played. This week, the league said it has suspended Zwolensky "from being a part of any team at any capacity" in the league for the remainder of the season. ir in in WMMMWsMSMlii- n- Pet GB Orlando 2 0 1.000 Durham 1 1 .500 1 Georgia 1 1 .500 1 Carolina 0 0 .000 1 Tampa Bay 0 0 .000 1 Virginia 0 2 .000 2 first half champion Friday's results Orlando 4, Virginia 3 (1 1 innings) Durham 3, Georgia 0 Carolina at Tampa Bay.

The proposed Triple-A World Series, a natural extension from the recently announced realignment that will drop the level from three leagues to two next year, is not a done deal just yet.

But it's getting there. "It's not definitely a but it's definitely something we want to work on," said Norfolk Tides general manager Dave Rosenfield, who served on the realignment committee. There are still details to be worked out regarding sponsorship and money just basic execution." The format has yet to be determined for the potential playoff between teams from the International and Pacific Coast leagues. The series would likely be played at a predetermined site; Las Vegas and New Orleans have been discussed as cities that could become home to the event. Rosenfield said the committee is considering a four-team field in order to double the TV audience and increase the number of fans who would travel to the host city.

The four-team format would either take the champion and runner-up from both leagues, or possibly incorporate the IL and PCL title series into the Triple-A World Series semifinals. COMING UP. Former William and Mary lefty Adam Butler, a left-handed pitcher who went undrafted two years ago, continues to prosper in the Atlanta Braves' organization. Last year he led the Braves' farm system in saves (30) and pitching appearances (57) while pitching at three different levels.

With Double-A Greenville this year, Butler has rebounded from a rocky start and is now 2-1 with eight saves and a 3.10 ERA. He has struck out 27 batters in 29 innings. MAN FOR ALL SEASONS. Quick. Name the last quarterback other than Peyton Manning to start a football game for University of Tennessee.

The answer: Todd Helton, early in the 1994 season before Manning took over as a freshman. What does this have to do with minor-league baseball? Simple. At the Triple-A All-Star Game this past week, Helton now a slugging first baseman in the Colorado Rockies organization won the home run hitting contest. Former Peninsula Pilots icon Bubba Smith, now in the Texas Rangers organization, and three others came up short against Helton in the final round of the contest. TV TIME.

With no major-league games during All-Star break, Through Thursday's games Despite changes, Virginia falls again By Rea McLeroy Daily Press HAMPTON The Virginia Roadsters altered their defensive line-up and put their top six hitters at the top of the batting order, but lost to the Orlando Wahoos 5-2. The Roadsters simply tried to do a little too much defensively, attempting to throw out a runner at the plate with no outs in the sixth inning. The runner scored easily, but more importantly the other runners advanced to second and third on an error on the throw. The play opened a three-hit, four-run Orlando rally that put the Wahoos in control, 4-1. "We made a couple of bad decisions on defense," O'Linski said.

"We tried to throw the runner out at the plate instead of conceding the run and leaving the runners on first and second. If we could rewind to that point the outcome could be different." Instead, the Wahoos scored on Sue Lewis-Newton's no-out single and Lewis-Newton and Liz Mizera advanced to second and third. Destiny Mollison hit a bloop single to plate Mizera, Wendy Johnson singled to score Lewis-Newton and courtesy runner Bridgett Ballay scored on a sacrifice by Keri Riggs for the 4-1 lead. "With no one out, you can't try to throw out the runner at the plate," O'Linski said. "Subsequently, they had dink hits.

The first one loads the bases, setting up a force situation that could have changed the outcome." The Wahoos (2-0) scored again in the seventh, but the Roadsters NEW HOLLAND LUBRICATES JULY SPECIALS 134 Hydraulic Fluid 2.5GL....9624450 11.20 5GL 9624451 21.15 15W40 1 Qt 9613290 1.02 10W30 1 Qt 9613313 1.02 i Tute "..9613310 92 15 PITCHING answered when Rachelle Currie and Kari Kunnen-Kossen singled then Currie scored on Melanie Murray's single. Three of the Roadsters' four hits were in the seventh inning. Mollison earned the victory, allowing two runs on four hits while walking one. NEW HOLLAND Filters 15 OFF Miami Herald MIAMI The man who will save the Florida Marlins' offense is Mickey Morandini? The Marlins are last in the National League at 4.25 runs a game, and as they slip further and further from first place in the National League East, the specter of what lies behind them (New York, Montreal) is almost as frightening as what looms ahead (Atlanta). The solution is Mickey Morandini? Well, why not? The Phillies second baseman, or a guy like him perhaps Mike Lansing if Montreal falls out of the playoff hunt fast enough is a better answer than Cecil Fielder or Darren Daulton or Greg Vaughn or any other past-his-prime wall-banger.

The Marlins finished the first half of 1997 with 56 home runs, last in the majors, but manager Jim Leyland raised a fine question when he asked: Who on this team isn't good enough? Bobby Bonilla? Moises Alou? Gary Sheffield or Jeff Conine? Sheffield and Conine are having down years, but the only clear upgrade on the market is Oakland's Mark McGwire, who doesn't want to come to the National League and can veto any trade. The gutsy Daulton is one stumble away from forced retirement, Wil Cordero has a world of off-field problems, and Fielder, Vaughn and Texas' Dean Palmer are having down years. Conine, at home, is more likely to rebound in the second half than a hired gun in new surroundings. Consider how Vaughn struggled last season after going from Milwaukee to San Diego. What the Marlins need is a pesky guy at the top of the order.

They thought, or rather hoped, they had one entering the season in second baseman Luis Castillo. He hit .262 with 26 runs and 17 stolen bases in 41 games in 1996 after being promoted from Double A Portland, but found out there's a big difference between playing out the season on a mediocre club and going start to finish with a contender. The Marlins are eighth in the league in steals, 10th in attempts. Castillo and No. 2 batter Edgar Renteria (combined 29 steals in 49 attempts) are hardly a distraction on the base paths.

When the batting order comes around to Sheffield, Alou and Bonilla, the opposing pitcher rarely has to worry about anything but Sheffield, Alou and Bonilla. Morandini, Lansing or someone of that ilk could be that irritant atop the lineup. Atlanta has Kenny Lofton. The Mets have Lance Johnson. Montreal has Mark Grudzielanek and even F.P.

San-tangelo. The Marlins are trying to get Morandini from the Phillies, who are taking calls from a number of teams with the same thought in mind. Hindsight, easy hindsight, suggests the Marlins should have pulled the trigger this winter on a deal for improves-with-age Tony Phillips before the Angels got him from the White Sox. But the choice was made to give Castillo a shot, and it didn't work. Do you blame the Marlins for putting too much responsibility on the shoulders of a 21-year-old? Maybe, but before you do, ask this: How many players were the Marlins supposed to sign this off-season 25? Columbus clips R-Braves 5-3 The Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio Ivan Cruz hit a two-run double in the first inning Saturday night to start the Columbus Clippers to a 5-3 International League victory over the Richmond Braves.

Clay Bellinger tripled in a run later in the inning. The Clippers added runs in the fourth when Mike Figga scored on an error by Richmond shortstop Robert Smith and in the sixth on Homer Bush's sacrifice fly. Singles by Raul Rodarte in the fifth and T.R. Lewis in the ninth and a fielder's choice by Brad Tyler in the ninth scored Richmond's runs. Columbus starter Frank Lank-ford (2-2) was the winner, giving up one unearned run on five hits, walking one and striking out two in seven innings.

Larry Luebbers (2-11) pitched the first six innings for the Braves and yielded five runs, four of them earned, on eight hits, with four walks and six strikeouts.
