Either the player holds the card you are looking for, or does not. However, that does not mean that all finesses are equal.

There are a number of factors that dictate which of several finesses you should take. This hand highlights one of them. North's jump to three hearts was a limit raise in the modern style, showing 10-12 points and four-card support. South had just enough to accept partner's invitation. As a matter of technique, declarer ducked the first diamond and won the second.

The queen of hearts was run to the king. East cashed the king of diamonds and then switched to a spade. Should declarer take the spade finesse? Only if South wants to run the risk of losing the contract unnecessarily. Even if the spade finesse were to succeed, declarer will still need the club hook to make ten tricks. And if the club king is onside, the spade finesse is not needed declarer will be able to discard the queen of spades on the fourth club.

So correct technique is to rise with the ace of spades, draw another round or two of trumps and then run the jack of clubs. If that wins, repeat the finesse as often as necessary and then take your spade sluff on the long club. Yes, we know that if the spade finesse was destined to win and the club finesse loses, refusing the spade finesse would cost a second undertrick. But do you really care whether you go down 100 or 200? Isn't winning a 500-point rubber more important than that extra undertrick? Tomorrow: Bridge ed status wagon if the dress has some extra beading. Who buys this stuff? Well, the market is dwindling, what with Ivana having to learn to make do and Imelda keeping a lower profile.

That leaves the occasional rock superstar. But despite dire predictions that couture is dying from lack of rarefied bank accounts, Paris continues in this biannual blitz of furs, feathers and photographers. A couture line seldom pays for itself. But couture does pay eventually. Top designers invest the energy and money in their name.

Their financial success depends on the million-dollar licensing agreements which lend their label to everything from luggage to lipsticks. So the next time you treat yourself to a Chanel lipstick or Dior powder, just think, all that glitz and glamour is rubbing off on you. After everything in the home is sorted and filed, the next step is contact with relatives.

Oldest members of the family who are competent should be visited, with a tape recorder beside the chair as questions are asked which stir memories. Questions can be asked about the specific places where ancestors lived and died, names of children, where they went to church, where they were buried. Related families may engage in research together, with copies of records sent to a designated family historian. Charts for each family should contain names of parents and children with information about births, baptisms, marriages, schools attended, employment, and deaths. New organizations may be entered on forms in the "Family Registry" at the Denbigh Family History Center, 902 Denbigh which provides free nationwide circulation.

Names and addresses of family organizations are published in the The Genealogical Helper, by alty: News-talk station WNIS-AM (850) in Norfolk. Lightning hit a phasing system at the station's tower site during the early morning hours of July 25. The phasing system allows WNIS to convert from a low-powered station at night to a more powerful, station during the day. WNIS was unable to convert to high power. For more than a week, the station has worked with a reduced signal, which doesn't travel to much of the Peninsula, said owner Bob Sinclair.

The station thought it had the problem fixed Tuesday, only to discover another blown fuse. WNIS expects to go back to full power by this weekend, Sinclair said. Kaiea ru. Au trust 4-6: "Baxter" and "Silence of the lambs" Unlike research for whites, recent black genealogies are more easily traced through the lines of mothers and grandmothers. White maternal lines are sometimes impossible to identify, in thousands of published pedigrees, even genealogies of wealthy and illustrious families, the given names and surnames of women are a blank. Mentioned as "my daughter" in the father's will and as "my beloved wife" in the husband's will, a woman may have had her name appear in no existing record. Identification of blacks without surnames is no less difficult.

Tracing ancestors whose names are recorded simply as "Ned" or "Amanda" is similar to problems of research in Scandinavian countries, where surnames were not finally stabilized until 1912. Even after adoption of surnames, many who came to America confused their descendants by giving, as surname, the name of the manor or village from which they had come. Researchers in both white and black lines will easily trace some names while little is available for others. Where does research for blacks begin? Exactly where all researchers begin in the home and immediate family. A file folder should be labeled for each surname (family name).

Every piece of information the family has should be put into the folders: birth certifi- said. The station delivers news of local interest and lots of sports coverage, including Washington Redskins and University of Virginia football games. The station is simulcast on Robinson's other station: WXGM-AM (1420), which used to be strictly an oldies station. The two stations are known as "XTRA 99.1 FM," and most of the announcers formerly heard on WXGM-AM now work for both stations, Robinson said. Robinson said he's worked since 1982 to put Gloucester's FM station on the air.

First, he had to win a lottery conducted by the Federal Communications Commission awarding the new frequency to a station owner. Then, he waited for a construction permit, which was approved by the FCC four months ago. As research accelerates, outstanding collections of black genealogy will become available. 0 Tracing African-American families is thought to be especially difficult and mysterious, but it is no more so than finding information about millions of others who did not own property or get their names in court records. Despite these obstacles, decades of searching and sharing records of many nations has resulted in a merging of genealogical information, overwhelming research and storage technology. That increase of resources, a world phenomenon, is already occurring for black families. Records are being opened which have been, all along, on the shelves of courthouses and libraries, unopened.

Each researcher adds to the storehouse of family history as he or she pools information with others, gathers cousins for a family reunion, gleans dates from family notes and old Bibles, ferrets out old boxes of papers and letters, medical records and Social Security information. News Continued from Dl pays more than 50 cents a month to ESPN, the most expensive non-premium channel, Day said. TNT costs subscribers more than 30 cents a month, he added. Most stations cost the consumer no more than 2 or 3 cents a month, Day said. Warner last raised its rate, by 1 a month, a year ago.

RADIO GLOUCESTER: Gloucester County, as well as the entire Middle Peninsula, has a new radio station. WXGM-FM (99.1) signed on the air Monday morning with an adult contemporary format that stresses oldies from the 1960s, said co-owner Tom Robinson. Doesn't it seem like just a few months ago that you saw those frivolous French frocks in the papers and magazines? No, those were the ready-to-wear showings, very different. Ready-to-wear clothes are actually manufactured and can be purchased by mortals who have enough confidence and cash say, the equivalent of two mortgage payments for a skimpy little sweater dress. Couture clothes are special, one of a kind. They are the theater of fashion and can only be had by women who can pay the high-ticket prices to be part of the play.
