Doilgjlrm C2 Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997 INSIDE SPORTS 3 U.Va.'s Holland bucks conventional wisdom Dave Johnson Couples pulls out of Skins Game Fred Couples, the Skins Game pleading money winner, has withdrawn from this weekend's com-petition due to the serious illness of father. Couples, winner of the Skins Game the past two years, will be replaced by David Duval, the sec-ond-leading money-winner on the PGA Tour. Duval will join Tiger Woods, Tom Lehman and Mark O'Meara in the 15th annual Skins Game at Rancho La Quinta Country Club in California on Saturday and Sunday. "We all feel terrible for Fred and his family," Chuck Gerber, executive producer of the event, said.

"Fred has been an integral part of the Skins Game and our prayers go out to Fred and his family." Duval, 26, won his final three PGA events of the year, the first the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill in mid-October. He has earned $1,885,308 second behind Woods. Duval had seven top-10 finishes in 29 events this year. COLLEGE BASKETBALL Ex- Once more in English An interesting little political spat is grabbing the headlines in Sri Lanka, all of which would be of no interest whatsoever except it involves a world-class athlete. Sprinter Susan thika Jayas-inghe, 20, who won the silver medal in the women's 200 meters at the World Championships in Athens in August, is the focus of a fight between government ministers and opposition spokesmen.

Jayasinghe has accused senior sports officials of sexual harassment and has said she fears for her life. That led the opposition party to demand and receive a 30-minute parliamentary debate on the matter, during which one government minister said: "Do not make this silly and naive yet talented athlete into the dancing monkey of the (opposition) It's not every day you see quotes like that. From wire service reports seven games but finished second in the WAC's Pacific Division. MORE COLLEGE FOOTBALL Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Bruce Arians was fired along with three other assistants. Secondary coach Curley Hall-man, special teams coach Danny Pearman and receivers coach Woody McCorvey were the others dismissed in the aftermath of a 4-7 season, Alabama's worst in 40 years.

Brigham Young football coach LaVell Edwards was released from the hospital, one day after undergoing surgery to unclog two arteries in his neck. Edwards, 67, was doing well, but looked tired before his afternoon release. Edwards was admitted to the hospital Monday after complaining of blurred vision. Edwards told doctors he had experienced five such episodes the past month. Tests showed one carotid artery in Edwards neck was completely blocked, the other partially blocked.

BYU posted a 6-5 season this year, losing its final regular season game Saturday against Utah. From staff, wire service reports Ferguson High standout Antwain Smith has reached the plateau. Smith, who plays for Saint Paul's, had 999 points entering Tuesday nighfs game at St Augustine's, and broke the mark with a dunk three minutes into the game. Smith finished with 23 points as Saint Paul's won 100-90. Star shooting guard Chris Her-ren, who has battled substance abuse problems in the past, has voluntarily left the Fresno State basketball team "to focus on getting my life back in order." Herren said he has "been battling a personal problem for the past four years." COLLEGE FOOTBALL Michigan State's snubbing of an invitation to the home-state Motor City Bowl has the inaugural event's planners courting other schools for the at-large berth.

Motor City Bowl planners rescinded an offer to Michigan State after the school refused to accept the local invitation offered last week. No. 24 Air Force, coming off its best season in six years, has accepted an invitation to play in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 20. The Falcons (10-2) won their first tournament.

Each bowl-eligible team would go into a pool, and the committee would decide the pairings. No vote will be taken at the convention, however. "It would be done for the betterment of college football," Holland said, "not for bowl A or conference W0MACK OK. In his first comment since the Thursday night arrest of backup tailback Antwoine Womack, Virginia coach George Welsh said no disciplinary action will be taken at this point. "He's all right on the team right now," Welsh said.

Womack, a true freshman from Phoebus High, was charged with assault and battery in connection with an alleged incident almost two weeks earlier. He faces a Dec. 12 hearing. Womack also has been hampered by a sprained knee that caused him to miss six games. He returned against N.C.

State on Nov. 15, but carried only five times. "I don't know if he's 100 percent now or not, but he's practicing better than before North Carolina State," Welsh said. "I think it's just a matter of confidence and going out there and getting hit a couple of times. He should be all right.

He'll be ready to play." SHORT TAKES. In case you missed it: N.C. State athletics director Les Robinson said Monday that he and football coach Mike O'Cain, whose job security has been questioned all season, have a "verbal agreement" for a four-year contract extension. Virginia safety Stephen Phelan was named the winner of the Brian Piccolo Award, which goes to the league's most courageous player. Delaware forward Darryl Presley, who signed with Virginia but transferred after one season, had six points and 10 rebounds against his old school as the Cavaliers defeated the Blue Hens 64-57 Tuesday night.

According to conventional wisdom, the University of Virginia has a better than 50-50 chance of being left out of the bowl picture for the first time since 1992 even if it defeats Virginia Tech Saturday. But athletics director Terry Holland doesn't buy conventional wisdom. Not yet, anyway. "I'm not discouraged," Holland said Wednesday afternoon. "Certainly nobody's eliminated us, except of course for the (Bowl Alliance).

If we beat Virginia Tech we earn the right to go to a bowl. It is conceivable we could be left out, but those decisions aren't even close to being made. And we're doing everything we can not to be left out. "There are six ACC teams Qf Virginia wins) and four guaranteed spots, so somebody's going to get left out. Our job is to control what we can, and we must win on Saturday.

I expect the team to respond, and I expect the bowls to respond appropriately." One person who believes the Cavaliers have an uphill battle is Tom Mickle, an associate commissioner with the ACC and author of the Bowl Alliance. On Monday, Mickle said Virginia's postseason situation "doesn't look good." The only thing for certain is that Florida State will go into the Alliance as the conference champion. With the second pick among the ACC's remaining bowl-eligible teams, the Gator could take eighth-. ranked North Carolina. But since UNC played there last year, the Gator might take Clemson instead with Carolina going to the Peach.

That would leave the Carquest to pick between N.C. State, Georgia Tech and Virginia (if it wins Saturday). Holland acknowledged the Cavaliers are an unlikely fit here because they played in the Car-quest last year. If Virginia isn't among the ACC's four guaranteed spots, other possibilities might exist. The league is hoping to convince a bowl with an at-large spot to take its fifth team.

At least four have been contacted, but none successfully. "There are options for us," Holland said. "I believe we would have a legitimate chance if we win Saturday." Also, Holland said he plans to bring up a new idea at next week's National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convention in Chicago. The plan calls for the creation of a selection committee made up of one AD from each Division I-A conference like the One used for the NCAA basketball i Mario Bradley to their practice squad.
