occasions so far as business is concerned last Monday there was hardly any stock on the market A few horses were offered at auction and a few sold privately Prices ranged from $50 to $125 In County Court several had their tax lists corrected ami two or three wills were admitted to probate among them that of Kid King Mrs Virginia King the widow qualified as executrix without bond as provided in the will All the property consisting of 180 acres of land about 4 miles from Stanford on the Danville pike 30 shares of National bank stock the personalty and other property was left to Mrs King until the youngest child reaches 21 jears of age after which she is to have one third during her life and the other two thirds are to be equally divided between the children The es tate is worth not far from $20000 Mr Crutcher ot Madison county and Mr A Oldham of Missouri wereap pointed to take charge of the charitable bequest made by Dr Geo Givens of which Elds King and Shouse were nom inated trustees by Dr Giyens Last Monday night was an eventful one in Stanford and vicinity our pris oners confined in jail hero effected their escape by sawing in two the iron bars of thetr cells Their names were Wm Dun negan arrested in Arkansas and brought back to this State to answer for the mur der of Nannie Bryant a girl whose body was found in Rockcastle river last winter or spring Janies Rainwater from Whit ley county under sentencoof 21 years in the penitentiary for the murder of old man Dowell Wm Dyehouse charged lOrse stealing and Larkin Bird 'll Laurel county charged with rob bh caron the railroad The er Thos Newland found saws and wooden keys used by the prisoners and lie thinks these things were carried in to ithem by Dunnegan's wife who visited him a short time ago They got out tv about 11 in the night There is iW no clue as yet to their whereabouts On the same night Mrs Kato Mundi wife of Mundi a one legged Irishman who lives in a little log cabin on the Crab Or chard pike about two miles from town was murdered in her bed Circumstan ces pointed to strongly to Mundi him self ns the guilty party that the coroner's jury in their verdict said that she came to her death by the use of hatchet or ax in the hands of Mundi Ho was accordingly arrested and lodged in jail Of course he denies that he is guilty but tno facts developed at the inquest place it beyond any doubt that he is the mur derer It was proved that ho had throat cited to kill her that he always treated her badly that she had at one time ob tained a divorce from him on account of his cruelty to her but that she after wards married him again that on tire morning of the murder he came to town and pretended to bo greatly afraid Unit he'd be suspected that he she and a little child were the only persons sleep ing in the house that night that a razor was lying on the bed by her body to make the impression that she had been killed with it perhaps as Mundi said committed suicide but the bone in her neck was cut and her neck broken and the razorhad no gaps in it nor any ap pearance of use and finally sleeve and wristband bad blood stains on them If there ever was a case which could justify the Misses Dinwiddle near town John Burgin began school at Christian College on Monday with a class of about twenty pupils Miss Eugenia Peyton opened her private school in same way with about fifteen The pub lic school nearly always a failure here so far goes begging Mr Blakeman hav ing retired gracefully after trying about one week to gather in the many kids about town If our town would build a good school house there would never be any difficulty in securing the services of a good instructor HARRODSBURG Jerry Kersey bought a car load of hogs at 44jc per hundred John Young colored had a stroke of paralysis Tuesday while passing along the street John igg has sold his lot on Main St to Vanaradali A Cohen Price paid $800 There were two hundred tickets sold here last Saturday for the "Jumbo jam" at Islington Let everybody go to see Riding to night (riday) and Saturday matinee thereby aiding a good cause and enjoying a pleasant evening amusement besides It is rumored that on the discovered some flaw in the proceedings There is an enterprise the to raise $20000 by subscription and buy the old Asylum grounds (Gra ham Springs property) from the Govern ment and establish a stock fair and race Hon Proctor Knott Installed at rank fort with Enthusiastic Demonstrations rankfort September The inau guration of Hon Proctor Knott Gov ernor elect of Kentucky took place in this city to day and was the most impres sive and enthusiastic demonstration since Kentucky was made a State The Recep tion Committee left the city yesterday evening for Louisville where they met Governor Knott and escorted him to this city to day arriving here by the special train at 12 An immense crowd had assembled in the vicinity of the depot and when the train came to a stop the Governor elect and party were escorted to the Capital Hotel and assigned to the reception rooms The State Guards then marched to the Executive Mansion and received Governor Blackburn with mili tary honors He was seated in a carriage accompanied by Hon James Blackburn Secretary of State Hon James Can trill Lieutenant Governor and Colonel Samuel Churchill The military then marched to the Capital Hotel where Governor Knott the committee ot Recep tion and Arrangements were and then the procession formed in line Governor Knott was conducted to the Executive office by Governor Blackburn Mayor Taylor and a Committee of Re ception and was formally placed in pos session of the Great Seal of the Common wealth The retiring Governor caused the Executive Journal to be produced and a record was made and signed by Governor Blackburn that having served the term for which he was elected the seal of the State was turned over to his successor the Hon Proctor Knott Governor Knott in his inaugural said It is scarcely necessary that I should in dulge in any labored attempt to heighten the impression of my sincerity in the simple declaration that every energy of my intellect shall be devoted to a compe tent understanding of the difficult and delicate duties involved in the dignified trust to which I have been called and that it shall be my constant and earnest purpose to discharge them faithfully fear lessly and fully Thoroughly impressed with the impor tance of this great truth and justified by the example of my predecessors on simi lar occasions I trust it will not be consid ered improper for me to declare here dis tinctly and irrevocably that in no case will 1 grant a pardon or remit the penal consequences of a conviction of a criminal offense unlessl shall be fully satisfied up on thorough and impartial examination of all the circumstances that it would be unjust to the convict or in some manner detrimental to the public interests to carry into execution the penalty of the law Upon no other principle in my judgment could I possibly exercise that high prerogative consistently with my obligation to see that the laws are faithful ly executed or With the inflexible de mands of justice which it is the prime object of all good government to fulfill Governor Knott and wife have taken rooms at the Merriwetber Hotel where they will remain) until the Executive Mansion is refitted and antici pate a most pleasant and economical trip The attraction in the Queen City will be the parade by the Order of Cincinnatus and the formal opening ot the Exposi tion and the river ride on the Ohio Dove shooting and bird suppers are all the rage On two successive evenings last week there were over 500 shots fired in a small hemp field of about six acres near this station and about 150 doves killed each day There were amongst the hunters some crack John Nichols Bates Wilson Morris Theldkeld and ount Smedley The poor birds would fly into the field and frequently run the gauntlet in safety hanged in Maysville last Tuesday A fall of seven feet did not break his neck He choked to death The dedication of the monument and un vailing of the statue of Gen Zachary Taylor twelfth President of road circles It is impossible to tell where the thing will end Mbs Campbell widow of the great Reformer Alexander Campbell and mother of Postmistress Mrs Virginia Thompson is visiting in that city Though more than eighty years of age Mrs Campbell retains her physical and mental faculties unimpaired a wor thy relict of the distinguished scholar theologian and philosopher whose fame increases place in Man chester Clay county last week Jud Link and Mr Treadway got into a diffi culty James MarkhamTown Marshal started to arrest them When Hacker ex Marshal went to assist the Marshal Milton Stivers interferred and mortally wounded Hacker and brother killed Stivers Link cut a man by the name of Markham with a knife when stepson Beverly White shot Link Link was arrested and placed in jail Last week a notorious character by the name of Henry Ghent was shot and in stantly killed at Eubanks Station four teeen miles north of Somerset by Will ir Morgan who in connection with a man named Tom Donnelly keeps a saloon at that place rom information gathered it seems that the men bad some trouble about a month since and Ghent had vow ed that he would kill Morgan inside of a month As it
