in the shape of a resolution offered by Senator Triplett providing thut upon adjourn ment Thursday the legislature name rankfort as its next meeting place (While no action upon the resolution jwas taken it is believed to foreshadow a return of the democratic legislators Ito the state capital soon possibly by ithe end of the week This action will probably be taken when a report is received from the committee sent to rankfort upon conditions as to the presence about the capital of militia or armed men and as to the advisa bility of resuming sessions at the Usual meeting place' This is rendered more likely as the defection occurred in the senate where the democrats jliave a bare working quorum 1 With the resumption of legislative business at rankfort in prospect andthe transfer to the courts of the iclaims of the rival governors asseems likely to be brought about in a few days' the clouds are rapidly lift ing and it is believed normal political conditions may be restored in the state in two or three weeks That much time at least will be required to secure the adjudication of the issues between the parties If the federal courts decide they have jurisdiction at will take much value and with out payment for stock or other fictitious There was a sharp discussion in the committee and several tilts between members brought on by an effort to make the platform read as it had been drawn up that the government should seize the rail roads on payment of actual value without payment for franchise Unanimous action was finally obtained by cutting out the words inserting instead the phrase stock or other fictitious The committee also unanimously favored direct popular legislation as a means of obtaining the result The committe also considered a proposition to recommend to the at tention of congress Senator Petti grew's bill for government ownership of railroads but it was voted down A number of set speeches were beard at the morning and afternoon sessions of the conference The night session was in the form of a mass meeting which was held at the auditorium and brought out some of the strongest speakers among the delegates including John Altgeld Monnett Samuel Jones John Crosby George red Williams and Tom Johnson President Lockwood of the anti trust league said is a remark able gathering in many respects Ev ery delegate paid his own railroad fare here and the speakers are all volun teers The league has not spent a dollar in promoting the movement delegates travled many miles for a purely unselfish motive This is not like a political convention as we have no promises to make or offices to give We are here to fight for a principle I firmly believe that this gathering is the beginning of a movement which will wipe every malvolent trust from the country within a few years It is unfair to charge that this is a politi cal scheme planned in the interest of one candidate or set of candidates We have members of all parties and classes in our ranks and we are all working with unselfish motives for the betterment of President Lockwood regrets that name was mentioned in the discussions and declares it was his intention to keep politics out of the conference It has been decided to limit all future addresses in the con ferences to 20 minutes in order to get through with the programme CLOTHINGH Overcoats Hats at Panic Prices to Make Room for thaj
