Channel 5's newscasts, including NBC Nightly News, thrashed the cnpetition, more than doubling their nearest rival in every time period. Jdoreover, at 11 p.m., Channel 5's local news was up 4 rating and 10 share points; at 6 p.m., it improved 1 rating and 6 share points, and at 5 J0 p.m., it picked up 3 share points. JTom Brokaw's NBC newscast did 4 hare points better than a year ago. iln Palm Beach County, each rating point translates to about 5,000 households with televisions. Shares measure only those homes in which a TV set is in use at any given time.) WPTV-Ch.

12 pretty much held iti ground for its 5:30 p.m. newscast, actually improving 1 share paint, but it slipped in most other tigie periods in its first book as a CBS affiliate. Overall, it was down 1 share and 2 ratings points. 6 p.m. news was off 3 rating and 4 share points and the 11 p.m.

newscast dropped 2 rating and 6 share points from the previous February. A factor in the news decline could be the release of popular anchors Reg Miller and Laurel Sauer after February 1988's book. One of the more dramatic fallouts from the network switch came in the 7-9 a.m. block. Last year, Channel 12 scored a 6 rating, 21 share with ABC's Good Morning America.

Last month, CBS This Morning registered a 2 rating and an 8 share. Channel 25 tallied only a 1 rating6 share as the market's new home of Good Morning America In many time periods, WPBF-Ch. 25 failed to register an audience large enough to measure in its first ratings book. A weak signal in mm share points. As expected, WTVX's prime-time ratings were less than a third of what they were with CBS programs.

WFLX-Ch. 29, which like WPTV maintained a status quo, also roughly equaled its overall ratings of the previous year. However, the prime-time block was down 2 rating and 2 share points, probably because it was facing additional movie competition from newly independent Channel 34. WAQ-Ch. 19, a low-power station that is just beginning to find its way onto cable systems, still has not achieved a measurable number in any time block.

However, Steve Berger, the station's general sales manager, said that he has obtained information from Nielsen that shows that the station's weekly cumulative rating has increased from a 3 in November (during the station's first rating experience) to 6 in February. This means that, at some point during any given week, about 30,000 people tune in, although it does not indicate when or for how long. some areas, being left off some cable systems and audience unfamil-iarity undoubtedly played a role. The most disturbing ratings invisibility for the station had to be for its 5:30 p.m. newscast.

At 6 p.m., it showed up with a 1 rating2 share, and Peter Jennings' national newscast on ABC doubled those figures at 6:30 p.m. Channel 25's 11 p.m. news registered 25 coming off a 58 lead-in from ABC's prime-time shows. WPBF management also must be distressed that WPLG-Ch. 10, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market ABC affiliate, almost matched those figures with 47 in Palm Beach County.

WTVX-Ch. 34 plunged dramatically overall as an independent, losing more than half its audience. But not all the news is bad. Its 5:30 p.m. newscast stayed even with the previous February's, and the 6 p.m.

news was down only 2 rating and 2 share points. With its own 10 p.m. newscast and INN news, rather than CBS programs, supplying a lead-in, the 11 p.m. newscast was down 1 rating and 4 WELCOME TO OUR NEW STORE, WHERE FASHION BEGINS AT SIZE 14. OUR PHILOSOPHY IS SIMPLE.
