Boggs, M.D., professor emeritus at Northwestern University Medical School (today Feinberg School of Medicine), arrived at Memorial Hospital in 1950 from Harvard Medical School and Brigham Hospital, as Director of Laboratories and subsequently as Head, Department of Pathology.

Until his resignation from this position in 1986, he had guided the growth and development of programs in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. During his tenure he supervised two moves to improved facilities; first in 1962 to the Memorial Research Building and then in 1980 to the Pathology present location in the Kroc Building, which was built through philanthropy that he was instrumental in securing. Always one to embrace the future of medicine, Dr. interest in Memorial continued over the years, culminating in a recent visit to the site of the 23-story state-of-the-art Ann Robert H. Lurie Hospital of Chicago, set to open in 2012.

In addition to clinical programs, Dr. Boggs was active in both research and teaching. His primary interest lay in infectious hepatitis and the isolation and characterization of the hepatitis virus. As a Professor of Pathology, he engaged actively in the training of students and residents in Pathology. He retired in 1991and was granted the status of Professor Emeritus.

Dr. own pioneering research in hepatitis and liver disease was funded through a contract with the US Department of Defense. Federal agencies also supported other research in the laboratories he directed: the Research and Development Command of the US Army, the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army, Health Education and Welfare, the National Institutes of Health. "Dr. Boggs was a dynamic pathologist who was very enthusiastic about his work and about Memorial Hospital.

He was a font of knowledge and always accessible to his colleagues. If you had a particularly puzzling case, he was always eager to help solve it, which he often did," says Lauren M. Pachman, MD, attending rheumatologist at Memorial Hospital. Among his many honors and contributions to the medical field, Dr. Boggs also served as Chief of Medical Staff, Evanston Community Hospital, a trustee of Loretto Hospital in Chicago, and President, Illinois Society of Pathologists (1965).

Other community causes included the Chicago Art Museum, University Club of Chicago and Chicago Yacht Club. Dr. Boggs was 91. He was preceded in death by Donna Shoemaker Boggs and son Joseph D. Boggs Jr.

M.D. and survived by granddaughter Jordana Dolores Boggs, sister-in-law Derry Shoemaker, fond uncle of Dru Shoemaker, Donald (Daphne) Shoemaker and five grand nieces and nephews.
