Lake Nona helps Faldo to prepare Nick Faldo is one player who hasn't found Augusta National's slick greens to be that big an adjustment, and for that he can thank the Lake Nona Club in Orlando.

Last week, course superintendent Brett Harris and his assistant, Murray Russell, shaved down a practice green to seven-64ths of an inch to allow Faldo to practice on similar conditions to those he'd find this week. "We double-cut and double-rolled and cut fresh cups so that they'd have nice, crisp edges," said Harris, who got the green to roll about 11.5 on the Stimpmeter, a device that measures greens speed. (A rating of 10 is considered fast.) Faldo is one of several players who tuned up for Augusta in Orlando. Other than the usual residents, last week's visitors included Frank Nobilo, Colin Montgo-merie and Jumbo Ozaki. DALY SUED FOR DIVORCE THE WIFE of John Daly, who is missing the Masters because he is in alcohol counseling, filed for divorce Tuesday in Shelby County, Tenn.

In her petition, the plaintiff, Paulette Dean Daly, alleges, "The defendant is guilty of inappropriate marital conduct as renders further cohabitation unsafe and improper." She also cited irreconcilable differences. The couple were married Jan. 28, 1995, and have a daughter, Sierra Lynn, who will be 2 in June. Daly withdrew from The Players Championship on March 28 and entered the Betty Ford Alcohol Rehabilitation Program in Rancho Mirage, that weekend. The date of separation on the divorce petition was listed on March 27.

LVLE WINS PAR-3 CROSS SANDY Lyle off the Masters office pool. Lyle, who won the Masters in 1988, captured the annual par-3 contest Wednesday, shooting 5-under-par 22 and then defeating Mark McNulty in a playoff. No golfer has captured the Masters the same year he won the par-3 contest For the second consecutive year, there were four holes-in-one: McNulty (fourth hole), Ben Crenshaw and Loren Roberts (seventh hole) and Bob Tway (ninth hole). Since the inception of the par-3 contest in 1960, there have been 37 holes-in-one. TWO GOLFERS competed in the par-3 contest with high-profile caddies.

Toting Corey Pavin's bag was NBA star David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs, and on Brad Faxon's bag was musician Glenn Frey of Eagles fame. "This is my first Masters," Frey said. "You can see this place on Grand prize drawing for a trip for two to Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego. Hourly drawings for other great prizes. Free autographs from some of the NFL's biggest stars.

And those are two key principles that you have to have in order to do very well at Augusta time and time again." Woods said he feels differently this year at Augusta than he did the last two years, when he arrived fatigued after writing term papers and taking finals at Stanford.

There is a different aura now that he is able to pour all his energies into his golf. In reality, as Woods arrives for a new shot at the Masters, the studying never really has stopped. He has crammed for Augusta National by dropping by The Golf Channel's offices in Orlando and watching old videotapes. He has picked the brains of others who have played the course for years. He worked as diligently on his golf swing and his putting last week as he ever did for any American Literature class.

And in a late tuneup Friday, he scorched the course at Isleworth by shooting 13-under 59. Woods may not win this week, but most expect him to win at Augusta one day soon. "Whether I win it on my third try or my 50th, it doesn't really matter," Woods said. "It's whatever you believe here at this golf course. This golf course is going to test every facet of your game, especially your mind." Imagine that Finals time, all over again.

But he hardly has shown signs of being a procrastinator when it comes to setting the golf world afire.

Golfs other three major championships put a high premium on experience, too, but none require the level of the Masters. Arnold Palmer, who won the Masters four times, did not win his first championship until his fourth trip to Augusta; Jack Nicklaus, he of the record six green jackets, on his fifth. Three-time winner Nick Faldo, who begins defense of his championship alongside Woods at 1:44 p.m. today, won his first title in his sixth go-round at Augusta. Ben Ho gan and Sam Snead won after playing Augusta 10 years apiece.

"I think there is a learning curve of playing Augusta and the discipline of playing the golf course, when to hit the ball, when not, when it's great to make that par and walk," Faldo said. 'This golf course comes up and gets you. You've got to be very careful. I've shot some bad numbers here simply by the golf course getting on top of you. It can do that" With Augusta's short, amicable par-5 holes easily accessible to a player of prodigious length such as Woods he regularly hits drives of 300-plus yards he has a big advantage over most of the field on those holes.

He has reached the 500-yard 15th hole using as little as a 9-iron for his second shot, and when he misses greens, he has the imaginative wedge game and soft touch needed to recover. As player and golf course are concerned, Woods and Augusta National make for a natural marriage. A power player with feel. It's a combination that worked pretty effectively for Nicklaus once he learned the nuances of the course. As far as easing his way into the picture as a contender at Augusta, Woods never will have that luxury.

After playing a round with Woods last year, Nicklaus proclaimed Woods may win more champion- ships at Augusta than Nicklaus and Palmer combined. That's 10 in case anyone needs help with the math. NOTES: The Hillsborough County Commission met for almost two hours Wednesday to discuss what to do when the money runs out for construction on a new Tampa stadium. Sandy MacKinnon, the chairman of the Tampa Sports Authority Construction Committee, told the commission that it would cost $5.9 million to shut down construction and $5.3 million to restart "We are kind of past the point of no return," MacKinnon said.

The new stadium has had $12.6 million poured into it already, but the rest of the $6.5 million available from a laid sale runs out next week. OUCS from B-1 eyed pirate mascot, was ridiculed as a wimp. The punch line was the team's NFL-worst record: 100-223-1. "I think what people perceive will be Bucs linebacker Hardy Nickerson said. "They won't view us as the same ol' Bucs.

They'll be like, 'Man, those guys have really gives us a totally different image." While the players were unanimous in their approval of the first makeover in team history, some fans need some time to get used to the new duds.
