12 Friday, Feb. 15, 1974 Television By Noel HoUton Our new menthol is a lemon. 1 I iSSMK. The now taste of lemon menthol Twistgivesyouasmoothercool iwist LEMON MENTHOL 100 Warning: The Surgeon General Has Determined That Cigarette Smoking Is Dangerous to Your Health. Twist Lemon Menthol DOs with the Evans family.

Maybe maybe not. I said I had mixed feelings. Into the main story was threaded an endless string of sharp one-liners, for instance, Florida's comment about their battered TV set: "The white ain't right and the black ain't beautiful." The writers seemed to feel a laugh was required about every 15 seconds. Most of this burden fell on Jimmie Walker who plays one of three Evans children, 17-year-old James Jr. Walker is a boney, dumb-looking dude who can get a laugh by tying his shoe.

He steals more than scenes. A neighbor refers to him as "Rodney Allen Rip-off." His larcenous habits were brought up every time the show lagged. When everyone thought James was going to get the job, James Jr. was sent out for groceries chaperoned by his sister. Returning, he said, "It's fun being rich.

I've been down to that store a dozen times, but it's the first. time I've been involved in a cash transaction." The family seemed to simply laugh it off. I couldn't. It hardly needs to be said that this won't do the image of the black community any good. Not that white kids don't steal, too.

When I was a punk teen-ager, I pilfered a few things. When I got caught my daddy wore my butt out with a belt. Had James Evans Sr. acted in character (he may be poor but he's responsible), he'd do the same to James Jr. But that's the writers' fault, same as on all the Bud Yorkin-Norman Lear shows.

Not much is allowed to get in the way of a "socially relevant" satirical swipe. Sometimes not even honesty. 'Good Times' Lacks Honesty Tuesday before last, Florida Evans left the employ of "Maude" Finlay to set up housekeeping on her own CBS series, "Good Times." The "Maude" episode was particularly memorable at the close. Maude and Florida, her black maid, and personal "cross" said their goodbys, choking back sobs, promising to see each other often. They shared a moment of silence before Florida said, "We both know It's not like that In real life." THE SCENE fairly glowed with a warm, unpretentious honesty and realism of the sort this self-indulgent, inconsistent series could use more often.

I hoped the same would characterize "Good Times," which debuted the next Friday. Well, it did and it didn't. And don't ask me (1) how Florida's husband "Henry" became "James," (2) how James' new job, the reason for Florida's quitting work, disappeared, or (3) how the whole Evans family got moved from Maude's upstate New York to a Chicago slum. I guess it doesn't matter anyway. The mixed virtues of "Good Times" left me with mixed feelings.

The satire was sharp. If it burned some white ears, well the show doesn't claim to be "Ozzie and Harriet" or, for that matter, "Sounder." AS THE tragi-comic storyline went, James got a chance for a government-funded union apprenticeship program starting pay, $2.50 an hour, with a potential top of $4.25. James was so confident when he left for his interview that he told Florida to use some of the rent money for a champagne celebration. James didn't get the union apprenticeship because, at 45, he was too old. He went home to his celebration with the bad news.

A sad scene it was, yet the episode was full of laughter-in-the-face-of-adversity humor. IN THIS respect, the intended goals of Esther Rolle (Florida) and John Amos (James) were realized. "We want to show people and people-problems," Miss Rolle had told me. "You can go beyond the color thing." Miss Rolle felt times are such now that even a laid-off white engineer could identify IB mj. 13 mg.
