Lovely Grace Kelly lovely clothes, too is again up to snuff as an American heirfss resorting in the famed French resort. And Jessie Royce Landis, as Kelly's mother who prefers bourbon to champagne, is really the cat's meow. In the story, Grant has retired from his Raffles type existence and has been cleared by the law. He hasn't stolen a thing in 15 years so when dowagers start being looted of their jewels in a manner typical of The Cat's, Grant is puzzled and suspected. He therefore undertakes the job of proving his innocence. He attempts to nab the guilty creature by anticipating his moves. Further continuation of the tale would be letting the bogus Cat's identity out of the bag, an unfairness to the paying customer. The magical Hitchcock touch is cleverly employed throughout the film, not only in the mounting of suspense but in the insignificant detail that bypasses the average moviegoer unfamiliar with the Hitchcock technique. A customary procedure in Hitchcock films is for the master melodrama! ist to hide himself inconspicuously in the picture. In To Catch a Thief, Hitchcock flashes briefly on the screen as a bus passenger seated next lo Grant. Moviegoers can catch To Catch a Thief Paramount pic-turel at the Beacham through Wednesday. It literally bubbles with humor, spice, sparkling dialogue and baffling complications which keep the moviegoer on tenterhooks right up to the heap bg surprise ending. It's film fare straight up the alley for the millions of Hitchcork fans who thrilled to such masterpieces as his Dial M for Murder and Rear Window. Filmed on the French Riviera "in VistaVision and Technicolor, To Catch a Thief would be worth every mile of its footage for its pictorial value alone. But it's real worth is in the superb cast and the thriller-dillcr story.
