Carnival Will Fete Handicapped People By BARBIE COENSON Edgewater High School bands, clowns, a folk singer and refreshments. Local merchants have supplied the youth group with a variety of gifts and prizes. Ln line with the Jewish New IP, resident of USY, Robert Year, one of the biggest "mitzvot" of commandments is concern for fellow men. "On Yom Kippur, people of the CSvish faith are commanded to give charity. Modern interpretation of charity is social action," according to Temple Israel's youth advisor, Dov Kentof.

Because of this, members of Hashomer. USY (United Synagogue Youth) have decided to hold their first annual handicapped carnival. Plans have been made to invite all handicapped persons, children and adults in the Orlando area. Entertainment will include Walt Disney World characters, Cohen, Edgewater High School junior, along with carnival chairman, Donna Golub; decoration chairman, Roberta Kaminsky, and the rest of the club have worked their hardest on this exciting and fun project and hope all handicapped persons will attend for a day of pure enjoyment. The carnival will be held Sunday from 3-5 p.m., at Temple Israel, 4917 Eli Street.

A. Boyd, band director. By ROBBIE TENBROOK and BEA WILLIAMS Apopka Memorial High School ave you heard the rumors of an unusual character bopping about Apopka Memorial High School lately? What is this "thing" everyone is talking about? They must mean Dewey! Dewey Darter is a bird. Well, actually a person, who comes alive on special occasions, creating spirit among the Apopka students. The Apopka athletic teams have been dubbed "Blue Darters" for more than 30 years.

The name "Darter" comes from a medium size southern hawk, the fastest of the hawk family, for the way it darts on its prey. In the 1970-71 school year, the Varsity Club nrfmed the Darter, "Dewey." The idea of a "Dewey Darter Mascot" was started by the 1972 Student Council and Erin Miner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norris Miner of Apopka, began the tradition as the first "Dewey Darter" that year. This year, Barbara Goodwin, a senior, plays the role of the mascot, "Dewey Darter." Barbara was chosen from many senior girls competing in the Dewey Darter try outs.

The selection is based on cheering ability and enthusiasm. Barbara, garbed in her self-made Darter outfit, represents 1,525 Apopka Memorial students as their spirit symbol as she helps the varsity cheerleaders promote spirit and good sportsmanship at all games and pep rallies. Barbara, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Goodwin of Apopka, has many other activities.

She has been a cheerleader since junior high, a class officer, and homeroom officer. 8-E Friday, October 12, 1973.
