1) Television 8-B Sentinel Star, Saturday, January 3, 1981 Previews and reviews Noel Holston I I 2 stations expanding news to hour British squadron defuses explosive situation in drama series, 'Danger PBS series pits man aaainst Nazi bombs Orlando television stations this week announced major changes forthcoming in their respective early-evening newscasts. WESH-Channel 2's "Newscenter is currently Orlando's only how-long local newscast. Come Jan. 19 WESH will start splitting the hour so that the two halves "sandwich" the p.m. "NBC Nightly News." On the same day, WFTV-Channel 9 is going to expand its p.m.

"Eyewitness" to an hour spanning WFTV's early-evening "Eyewitness" has been Orlando's top-rated newscast for about two years, so the only surprising thing about the decision to expand is that it wasn't made sooner. On the other hand, it is curious that WFTV is expanding into a time slot, p.m., that WESH has written off as infertile territory for news. v. aid Arbi-tron show that the p.m. portion of WESH's "Newscenter 2" running a poor second in viewership to WDBO-Channel 6's MASH" reruns (but ahead of the last half-hour of "The Merv Griffin Show" on WFTV). The "Newscenter" segment, in turn, lost viewers and finished behind both WFTV's "Eyewitness" and WDBO's 'Newswatch." By moving the syndicated "Hour Magazine" into the 5-6 pjn. slot Jan. 19, WESH hopes to improve the performance of its "Newscenter" segment.

By placing the second half of "Newscenter" after the "NBC Nightly News," WESH hopes to benefit from both a strong lead-in (which may get even stronger when CBS's Walter Cronkite retires in the spring) and from the fact that more people are home from work at 7 than at 5:30. Another potential plus is that the p.m. "Newscenter" segment won't be competing with other newscasts or high-powered reruns. Rather, it will be up against WDBO's "PM Magazines," the novelty of which may be wearing off, and WFTV's "The Joker's Wild," a game show. In addition, WESH is taking steps to eliminate the redundancy that has long afflicted its dual half-hoars of "Newscenter.

WESH is subscribing to what program director Ken Smith calls a "'PM Magazine of news," the newly formed News Information Weekly Service (NIWS). WESH's research has indicated that viewers, especially the younger viewers so attractive to advertisers, want more feature-news and "lifestyle" reporting. NIWS will supply WESH and 35 other member-stations with some 15 weekly stories, including "newsmaker" profiles, mini-documentaries and features on money, physical fitness and the environment; Other new additions will be "visits" from Dr. Art Ulene, the 'Today" show's "family doctor," and commentaries by syndicated columnist Carl Rowan. WFTV's news director-anchorman Bob Jordan couldn't be happier with WESH's decision to move its pjn.

"Newscenter" segment In fact, Jordan said, WESH's vacating of that time period motivated WFTV to expedite longtime plans for expanding its "Eyewitness" newscast. "We were planning to go head-to-head with them (WESH's 'Newscenter') at 5:30 this fall," Jordan said. "There's nothing wrong with 5:30. It's not a jmxed time period. "There are plenty of people home at 5:30 who are interested in news," Jordan contended, noting that WESH's p.m.

"News-center" attracted considerably more viewers in November than WFTV did with the final half-hour of "Merv Griffin." Jordan expects the new p.m. "Eyewitness" segment initially to pick up a goodly portion of "Merv Griffin" segment's audience, which is much bigger than the segment's, plus some loyalists." And as the year goes by, he said, he expects to be getting more and more of the people who were watching WESH's "Newscenter," According to Jordan, WFTV, unlike WESH, will not be using any outside services to flesh out its hour's worth of early-evening news. The expanded "Eyewitness" will have more feature material as well as more news, Jordan said, but it all would be locally generated. "We've just ordered $200,000 worth of new equipment," he said, "and we'll be putting two more camera crews on the street." He pooh-poohed the NIWS service to which WESH will be subscribing, calling it "the video version of Hamburger Helper." Jordan said he looked at the NIWS package but turned it down because he felt the content, "canned features from other stations" in his words, was "of questionable interest in this market." Steve Homan, WESH's news director, disagrees with Jordan's assessment of the NIWS service. "They've improved it since Bob saw it," Homan said.

"It's a legitimate news service. I was very impressed." As for adding personnel, Homan said su-scribing to NIWS was "like adding one-and-a-half crews" but that, if he feels he needs them later in the year, he has budgeted for two more reporters. WDBO-Channel 6, meanwhile, has no immediate plans for a one-hour early-evening "Newswatch," though news director Harvey Cox says expansion is inevitable and that he's looking into what will be required in terms of additional equipment and manpower. Asked how he expected WFTV to do with its extra half-hour of news, Cox said, "I wish them' tuck it's an awful lot of time to fill. I know I wouldn't want to do an hour with the staff Tve got now." The first important test of the restructured newscasts will come in February, when Nielsen and Arbitron conduct another ratings "sweep" of the Orlando market.

the young second lieutenant gets through the ordeal with mixed feelings. His nervousness causes him to vomit, but the applause of bystanders gives him an unexpected lift. All of this is extremely well done, but it is difficult to figure out where the other 12 episodes will go. The prospect of a "Bomb of the Week" special is not terribly stimulating. Still, the project has promising credits.

It was created and produced by John producer of "Upstairs, Downstairs," and "The Duchess of Duke Street." Ash is played by Anthony Andrews, the appealing actor who played the man who married Geor-gina in "Upstairs, Downstairs." And the authenticity, in true British fashion, is heart-thumpingly on target.
