The Orlando Sentinel, Wednesday, September 21, 1983 Outlaw sprint cars will kick off Volusia Speedway Sunday afternoon racing By Tim Povtak on Friday and the New Smyrna Speedway using Saturday nights, the Volusia County track in Barberville has opted for Sundays. Sprint car entries, 35 as of Tuesday, will come from NewYork, Michigan, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida. Known more for unpredictable excitement, the sprint cars pack 600-700 horsepower into 1,400 pounds. Among the entries are A.J. Mueller, Longwood; Rocky Sullivan, Plant City and Ray Bolin, Occoee.

Also on the card is Southern Modified racing. Gates open at noon and racing starts at 2. The next two weeks should determine whether Bobby Allison wins his first Grand National points championship or suffers another late-season slump. The past two years, Allison lost the championship on the NASCAR short tracks, where he was dominated by the Darrell Waltrip-Junior Johnson team, which won its second consecutive title. Allison's victory at the Delaware 500 Sunday gave him a 101-point lead over Waltrip in the 1983 title chase with six races remaining, including this week at Martinsville and next week at Wilkes-boro, N.C., both short tracks.

A year ago, at this point, he held the same 101-point lead, but Waltrip won at Martinsville, Allison blew an engine and never regained his lead. Last season, Waltrip won three of the final six races when Allison went into a funk. Martinsville is the only track on the circuit on which Allison has never won. He has finished second there five times. "Now, we're capable of winning at a place like Martinsville.

And as long as we win races, it doesn't matter where he (Waltrip) finishes. Jeff Bodine's second-place finish at Delaware was his best as a Grand National driver. After 24 races this season, there have been 10 different pole winners. Ricky Rudd and Waltrip have each captured four poles and Cale Yar-borough, Terry Labonte and Neil Bonnett each have three. The driver with the most poles this season earns $25,000.

OF THE SENTINEL STAFF The Volusia County Speedway begins its Sunday afternoon racing this weekend with the first appearance of the spectacular outlaw sprint cars, which could reach 150 mph on the half-mile dirt track. Lake Harris is probably the best choice in the chain. Daily rainwater runoffs continue to concentrate schooling New Orleans at Dallas, 1 m.
