Tech responded with a 49-yard touchdown pass from DeShazo to flanker Steve Sanders. The Rutgers comeback started to take shape in the fourth when linebacker Shane Spells recovered a Joe Swarm fumble and advanced it to the Tech 36. Rutgers took advantage of the turnover with an 8-yard touchdown toss from Fortay to split end Mario Henry for an 8-yard score, making it 49-42.

"Defensively, we broke down in the second half and they took advantage of that," Basham Rutgers' attempt to recover an onside kick failed when the ball, headed toward Tech tailback Dwayne Thomas, veered out of bounds. "First thing on my mind was to get out of the way," Thomas said. "I just sized up the ball and it went right by me." yards to the Tech 1 yard line, only to have fullback Bill Bailey stopped for no gain on the last play of the half. The goal line stand was indicative of Tech's first-half dominance of the Big East's top rushing offense. "They played good and they stuffed us," Rutgers head coach Doug Graber said.

The Scarlet Knights offense got on track in the second half, outscoring the Hokies 35-14. "I'm damn proud of the team," Graber said. "The bottom line is we just dug a little too deep a hole in the first half." The catalyst for Rutgers appeared to be Fortay, who finished the day with 273 passing yards and two touchdowns. "Once he gets on a roll, he just has that ability," Graber said. With 3:07 remaining in the third quarter, Fortay threw a touchdown East's highest scoring offense to one touchdown in the first half, a 35-yard run by tailback Terrell Willis on Rutgers' opening drive.

Meanwhile Tech quarterback Maurice DeShazo orchestrated a balanced offensive attack of 21 passes and 22 rushes that put the Hokies up 35-7 at the half. Tech's final score of the half came when linebacker Marcus McClung blocked a Nick Sheremetta punt. It was advanced to the end zone by split end William Ferrell. "Excluding that first drive and Miami, that's the best first-half performance we've had all year," linebacker George DelRicco said. Rutgers quarterback Ray Lucas was held to 28 yards passing in the first half and was replaced by Bryan Fortay at the 7:36 mark of the second.

With under a minute remaining in the half, Fortay led Rutgers 65 BLACKSBURG It was almost a recurring nightmare for Virginia Tech. But fortunately for the Hokies, they woke up in time. Tech held off a late comeback attempt by Rutgers and recorded its first-ever victory against the Scarlet Knights 49-42 at Lane Stadium Saturday. Visions of last season's 50-49 Rutgers victory arose as the Scarlet Knights scored three touchdowns in the final 9:05 of the fourth quarter.
