Michael Allen rDespite Shaq's attacks, sumo wrestling in no danger Forget finesse. Forget subtlety. When the 7-foot--1 Shaquille O'Neal met the Japanese media for the first time Tuesday in Tokyo, the subject was breaking backboards. And how to dunk. And just why it is that he's so big and tall.

"I've broken five backboards and fractured one," O'Neal told a standing-room-only crowd of mostly Japanese reporters while on a promotional tour for Reebok. "And I plan to do it a couple times more." His first dunk in an exhibition game against a three-man Japanese company team proved too much for the rim, which hung limp and twisted as the crowd roared "sugoi," or "awesome." Despite Shaq's dunking exhibition, sumo wrestling appears to be in no danger of playing second fiddle to the NBA in Japan anytime soon. Door-slamming, TV-bashing hot tips for team meetings 'l' Former pitcher Steve Blass of the Pittsburgh Pirates was asked by Paul Meyer of the Pittsburgh to provide some keys to an effective team meeting and how a manager can best get the players' attention. "Door-slamming at the start and at the end is good," Blass said. "Volume on doors is very important.

And it should be unstructured. Tipping over the set is good, something like that, something that can't be readily fixed. "At the end of the tirade, muttering is good. Muttering so they can't quite hear it. That leaves the players not only chagrined and ashamed, but also little bit confused.

They aren't sure if he's muttering about a specific player." Jeff George Whine goes on special in Indianapolis yt, Quarterback Jeff George may be in for a rougher time from Indianapolis Colts fans than opposing teams now that his wish to be traded Football 1993 PRESEASON SPORTS NETWORK DIVISION l-AA POLL HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa The top 25 teams in the preseason 1 993 Sports Network Division l-AA football poll, with first-place votes In parentheses, 1992 records and total points: Pta 1992 7:04 p.m. Baseball: Chicago Cubs at Montreal. WGH1310AM. 1498 12-3-0 HEADED FOR HALL? Baseball Hall of Fame officials say they want to acquire the Durham Bull that sits atop the right field fence in Durham, N.C. The old field will be torn down this year.

ap has been stuffed and he's reluctantly rejoined the team. George didn't like all the boos he heard from the fans last year. Now many, many more are surely on the way. Merchants are already cashing in on the situation. One hot-selling T-shirt in Indianapolis pictures George in a sandbox saying, "My mommy won't let me go to camp." Moreover, some liquor stores are running specials on "Jeff George Whine." Forget about the record, angler just wants the meat Jim Montgomery has had pretty good luck fishing for salmon over the years, but he'd never seen anything like the nearly 4-foot-long, 43-pound Chinook he caught over the weekend in Lake Michigan.

Apparently, neither had state officials. But salmon records apparently mean little to him. "I almost decided not to have it weighed," Montgomery said. "I'm basically a meat fisherman and was just planning to cut it up and eat it." From wire aervlce reports def. Chanda Rubin, 6-2, 6-1 Asa Carlson def.

"This is only the third time the speedway will be completely repaved in its 33 years," speedway president H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler said. The repaving work will be part of $2 million in capital improvements that will start immediately after the Oct. 10 Mello Yello 500 Winston Cup race at the speedway.
