Please see Deaths, B6 LITTLE PLYMOUTH Lewis Walter Carlton, 82, of Little Plymouth, died Monday, June 19, 1989, in Riverside Mid-dle Peninsula Hospital in Gloucester. Survivors include his wife, port News resident, Miss Massey retired as an English teacher from the Newport News Public School System. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Newport News. Survivors include two sisters, Elsie L. Massey of Gautier, and Mildred M.

Thomas of Newport News; and one brother, Joseph A. Massey of Newport News. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 7469, York-town.

A veteran of Korea and Vietnam, Sergeant Hovanic was employed as a security guard at Newport News Shipbuilding. Survivors include his wife, Shirley A. Hovanic; three sons, William John Hovanic of Williamsburg, Stephen Francis Hovanic of Fredericksburg and Mark Joseph Hovanic of Knox-ville, and two grandchildren. Iona B. Harrison NEWPORT NEWS' lona Boyd Harrison, 78, died Monday, June 19, in Riverside Regional Convalescent Center. A native of North Carolina, Mrs. Harrison was a Peninsula resident most of her life. Survivors include four sisters, Mable Yellorday and Callie Stewart, both of Newport News, Dean Boyd and Bertha Boyd, both of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; and one brother, William Boyd, also of Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hampton National Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m.

Friday. Peyton M. Hatchell GRAFTON Peyton Milton Hatchell, 66, died Tuesday, June 20, in Riverside Regional Medical Center. A native of Isle of Wight, Mr. Hatchell was a Peninsula resident most of his life.

He was a member of Warwick Assembly of God, Newport News. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth A. Hatchell; four daughters, Rebecca H. Kusserow of Bethesda, Rachal P. Chaney of Richmond, Nancy H.

Gardner and Charlotte H. Waga-sky, both of Grafton; two sisters, Jacqueline Amos of Henrico County and Louise Turney of Taneytown, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Warwick Assembly of God, Newport News, by the Rev. James Chesh-ier.

Hamlin WAKEFIELD Claude Lee Hamlin, 64, died Saturday, June 17, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk. A native of Southampton County, Mr. Hamlin was a member of Union Hill United Church of Christ. He retired from Gray Lumber Company after 40 years service. Survivors include two daughters, Zina Stewart of Norfolk and Antonette Hamlin of Syra-cruse, N.Y.; three stepdaughters, Catherine Moton, Mary Dabney and Denise Stith, all of Wakefield; three sons, Clyde Jones of East Orange, N.J., Claude S.

Hamlin of Norfolk and Marcus Hamlin of Wakefield; three stepsons, Leroy Stith of Camden, N.J., Bernard Stith of Philadelphia and Earl Stith of Wakefield; six sisters, Flossie Turner of Suffolk, Mamie Ricks of Southampton -County, Hattie Artis of Franklin, Minnie Stewart of Hampton, Glenice Keys and Iola Keys, both of Newport News; two brothers, Bernie Hamlin and Wallace Hamlin, both of Southampton County; and 18 grandchildren. Harcum Sr. SUFFOLK James W. "Grunt" Harcum 67, died Monday, June 19, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital. Mr. Harcum was a native of Nansemond County.

He was employed at the Norfolk Naval Base and was a retired cab driver. He was a member of East End Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mary Virginia Harcum; two sons, James W. Harcum Jr. of Atlanta and Randy D.

Harcum of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sisters, Lessie H. Ruffins of Suffolk, Annie H. Britt of New York City and Garrye Harcum and Deloise Crockrell. both of Brooklyn; four brothers. Lelo H.

Lawing NEWPORT NEWS Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Talmadge Homer Lawing, 69, died-Tuesday, June 20, in his home. A native of Greenville, Sergeant Lawing was a Peninsula resident for 17 years. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, Elizabethton, and was also a member of Warwick Moose Lodge and Veteran's of Foreign Wars. Sergeant Lawing, a prisoner of war in World War II, retired from the Air Force in 1964 after 20 years service.

He also retired as helicopter maintenance instructor from civil service at Fort Eustis in 1974 after 10 years service. Survivors include his wife. Myrtle Merl Parker Lawing; two daughters, Pamela Lorraine Wilson of Las Vegas, and Paula Lynn Hooper of Toano; one son, Michael Talmadge Lawing of Hampton; one sister, Stella L. Percy of Johnson City, and three grandchildren. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m.

William H. Lawson HAMPTON William H. Lawson, 58, died Monday, June 19, in Riverside Regional Medical Center. A native of Vivian, W.Va., Mr. Lawson was a Hampton resident for 26 years.

Mr. Lawson was an Army veteran of Korea and retired as a meat cutter from Food Fair and Pantry Pride in 1979 after 18 years service. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine M. Lawson; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Galloway of Hampton; two sons, Bruce Lawson and Jeffrey Alan Lawson, both of Hampton; his mother, Myrtle S. Lawson of Narrows; three sisters, Madeline Porterfield of Ridge Creek, Leona Vogt and Gertrude Blaker.
