I I 1 I I II I ,1 I .1 ,1 ,1 II Iff Dailfl Press COLLEGE FOOTBALL Sunday, Nov. 10, 1991 C7 AIM! i -a Youngstown edges JMU ''fi Daily Press, wire service reports YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio Several mistakes, including three punting misadventures, hurt 12th-ranked James Madison as Youngstown State posted a 28-21 victory Saturday in a key matchup of NCAA Division I-AA independents at Stambaugh Stadium. Youngstown improved to 6-3 and dropped the Dukes to 7-3. Both squads are in contention for berths in the 16-team I-AA playoffs. The Penguins pressured punter Brad Hudgins, a freshman from Gloucester, all day.

They blocked one of his punts, partially blocked another, and forced him to run short of a first down. JMU was unable to take advantage of tailback Kenny Sims 162 yards on 24 carries. JMU quarterback Eriq Williams ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. With Youngstown leading 20-14, quarterback Ray Isaac scored on a 1-yard run with 12:54 remaining in the fourth quarter. That play capped a seven-play, 30-yard drive after a blocked punt.

Isaac then found Herb Williams for the two-point conversion and a 28-14 lead. On a fourth-and-1 play earlier during that drive, JMU's Richard Grevious tackled Isaac for a loss but was called for a face-masking penalty that gave the Penguins a first down. With 7:35 remaining, Williams found Anthony Archer with a 4-yard touchdown pass on fourth down. Trey Weis' PAT made the score 28-21. After an exchange of punts, Youngstown got the ball back with 2:57 remaining and ran out the clock.

JMU wide receiver Dwayne Hayes made four catches for 71 yards, but he lost a fumble following a reception late in the second quarter to spoil the Dukes' final first-half scoring chance. v. A 1 1 1 Brown 9-39. Wake Forest, Leach 19-65, Williams 10-38. PASSING Duke, 0.

Deacons upend Duke In Winston-Salem, N.C., John Leach ran for one touchdown and threw for another both in the fourth quarter as Wake Forest snapped a 17-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak, beating Duke 31-14 Saturday. The Demon Deacons (2-7 overall, 1-5 in the ACQ won the game by taking advantage of two critical mistakes by Duke's special teams late in the game. The Blue Devils (4-3-1, 1-3) were leading 14-13 with 12 minutes left when kicker Randy Gardner shanked a 15-yard punt that gave the ball to Wake Forest on Duke's 27. Three plays later, Leach busted up the middle for a 23-yard score with 9:56 to go. Bob Niedbala converted on the two-point conversion to make it 21-14.

Two series later, Duke's Walter Jones fumbled a punt return and Wake Forest's Matt Crosby recovered deep inside Duke territory. Mike Green connected on a 36-yard field goal his third of the game to make it 24-1 4. A loss for Wake Forest would have tied the ACC record of 18 set by Virginia in 1958-61. No. 9 Penn St.

47, Maryland 7 In Baltimore, Tony Sacca threw for one touchdown and ran for another in Penn State's 24-point first half, and the Nittany Lions continued their domination of Maryland. Penn State (8-2), which hasn't lost to Maryland since 1961, improved to 33-1-1 in one of the nation's most lopsided rivalries. It was Maryland's worst regular-season setback since a 48-0 loss to the Lions in 1969. Maryland, which got its only touchdown on an 11 -yard run by reserve Raphal Wall with 6:56 left, fell to 2-7 for the first time since 1971. Youngstown St.
