Or a disc jockey, with his knowledge of sound systems and jazz. Instead, he decided to go into social work, specializing in troubled children. Porter of Longwood, a doctoral candidate at the University of Central Florida who had just been awarded a teaching fellowship at the college, died Friday of natural causes. He was 36.

"He loved it, working with children," said his mother, Gwendolyn Lane of Longwood. "He'd always been interested in children and that field." After earning an associate of arts degree at Brevard Community College, he enrolled at UCF in 1993 intent on a degree in journalism. He was editor of the school paper, Central Florida Future, before he graduated in 1995. But carpal tunnel syndrome ended his thoughts of writing daily on a computer, his died Friday, July 21. Mr.

Kettle was a businessman. He was born in Houston. He was a member of Isleworth Country Club, Indian Creek Country Club, The Surf Club, Miami Beach, and Quidnessett Country Club, North Kingstown, R.I. "He could have been an artist," she said. "He could draw anything portraits, buildings, anything." But Porter's outgoing, friendly personality made him a natural with children, his mother said. He worked for a while in a private psychiatric practice in Brevard before joining Broken Glass, a nowclosed juvenile offender treatment program.

His desire to do research in the fields of addiction and attention deficit disorder led him back to UCF, where he enrolled this summer in a doctoral program in the department of social work. He wanted to research whether children with attention deficit were predisposed to drug addiction, his mother said. "Helping other people was what he was interested in," Lane said. Porter is also survived by his father, James W. Porter of Palm Bay, and brother, Terry Porter of Winter Park.
