Eatclitt, W. S. Paxton. DepUty 01 Houtton Society, Since the cloBint' of Lent there has been more activity in a social way in this city, and decided change in the manner with which those who enter into the social pleasures amuse theraselvea. The spring season, which here heralding the fast approaching summer as easily discernible from the character of (fiven as from the languor and ennui of those who might be classified devotees of society.

Germans, receptions, teas, balls, fact everything pertaining to the glare and light ot the heated ball room, which seemed but short time ago no fascinating, are all tabooed end relegated to the past, associated perhaps in the minds of those who participated in them with charming friends, and perhaps there may be a sadness for a few society mon in ouch reflections, as they close tho book containing the. record of tho season's festivities and laughingly lend themselves to tho oatar- Uinments being given. The entrancing moonlight with which the south is blessed, the lovely grovos which surround our city, tho earth covered, with her brilliant robe of emerald greou and tho air laden with the scent of tho magnolia and fragrant flowers and tho thoughts which fancy BUZiest, an'l nmi'M like those tho social pleasures of the day aro to bo found. The contrast between seasons is striking, -and is perhaps therefore tho more enjoyable from'the formal affairs of winter to the informality surrounding tho present season pleasures is a thorough chimgo, and to nearly everyone a most enjoyable ono. Miss Frank Drlsh of Illinois, who has been upending tho winter in Houston, tho guest of Mr.

and Mrs. M. T. Jones, loft durmi; the week for her homo. Miss Drlsh has been ono of the most popular young ladies of the BOU- son, and her departure is regretted by her many friends hero.

Mr. and Mrs. William M. Rice, after quite trip over tho stato to San Antonio, Austin, Korrrillo and other places, returned during the week to Houston nnd aro stopping at tho Capitol hotel. Miss Laura McLomoro of Galvcston spout scvoinl days of the past week in tho city nnd whilo hero was tho guest of Mr.

and Mra.W. B. Botts. A pleasant affair took place on Wednesday ining. It was an excursion to Magnolia given by Miss Carrie Cargill iu compliment to hor charming guest, Miss Mary Lowo of Galvcston, who has been spending some time in tho city.

At the park dancing and boating wore tho pleasures of the evening. The party was chaperoned by Mra. Cargi'd, Mrs. Apploby.md Mrs. Perl, and the young people tho rmrty worn Misses Annie Mc- Ecorer, IvorTato, Edlo Davis, Ella Smith Grimkc, Mario Timpson, Justine Franklin.

Rico imtl O. K. Gorec. One of tho most pleasant entertainments of tho present season will tako place on Monday evening--given by tho club complimentary Mr. and Mrs.

K. C. Chatham aud Mr. and Mra.W.'W. Price.

The party will leave at 7 o'clock on the Magnolia Park and Bolt railroad. At tho park they will embark on the commodious steam Hiawatha, which will convoy them for a pleasure trip to tho bay. A brilliant moonlight will doubtless lend much to tho boauty of tho trip and tho pleasure of tho evening. Mr. William E.

Hamilton, one of the well- known young society men of tho city, had been out of town for tho past week, but is expected to return shortly. The not results of tho promenade concert and dance of nations, for the benefit of the Light Guard armory furnishing fund, is about 1700. The ladies composing the governing committee, Mesdames E. Stewart, Wm. M.

Kieo, M. Purl and T. A. Franklin, aro to bo congratulated on the artistic as well as the financial success of these entertainments, by whioh the armory and rooms of tho Light Guard will'be made thoroughly comfortable. Progressive euchre has been tho accepted And popular gamo at cards for many months In polite circles in this city.

It has, howovor, now a serious rival in tho game of high five, which threatens to bo a serious competitor if it does not altogether supplant it. Two drills a wook will probably be the military mandate issued shortly by Captain Frank A. Reichardt of tho Light Guard to put the company in proper condition for tho commg encampment, and tho young mon who oompose its membership, many of whom are active in the society life of this oity, must necessarily curtail social engagements accordingly. It might be suggested tnat they do society very actively at present, in order to be prepared for such a crisis, and that they might not fool so keenly their separation from their charming friends during tho time their attention is demanded by the volunteer militia laws of Texas. Miss Mablo Scott, who has been a most popular participant in Houston's thoroughly successful social season, left tome days sinca for tho Bluff citv on tha gulf coast, where she will remain during the summer.

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Ripley, after quite an extended trip up tbo country, returned to tho city on Friday. Lieutenant Gcorgo N. Torrey lott last night for Dallas, where ho will spend to-day religiously.

Miss Koto M. Turner of Gallatin, who will bo motjt pleasantly nml well remembered by many friends in this city, will sail for Europe on the 1st of June. Miss will take advantage of tho magnificent vocal training by the masters of tho old world during her residence there, and will doubtless prove a greater pleasure to her friends upon returning, who will watch with interest hor career and await hor return. The Kirmoss was repeated on Friday evening for tho benefit of Miss Lorio King. The programme was nearly the samo as when originally presented.

With the exception of the "Whatoh" cotillion and the introduction of tho Maypole danco thoro was no change. Also like tho former the latter presentation wai a thorough success artistically aud flnan- Clally, and Miss King has proved herself a thorough and competent teacher of dancing. Thoro wore a few changes among tho dancers, necessitated by tho absence from the city of those taking part originally--MlcsUrimkeand Abbott Cockroli being substituted for Miss Dr.isti anciMr. Haiiiilton. A numlrtir of tho young Imiios received handsome rlornl during tho evening from thoir ami gentlemen were also remembered, notably Kohort Bums and Arthur Cargill.

His peculiarity was that nobody was admitted in houso. His landlord called on him regularly for his rent and tho man would come out of his houso uud carefully look the door behind linn, pay tho amount due, bid his landlord good day, go back in his house and lock the door. Only a very fow people over saw tho man at all all.

This seemed so odd that the landlord remarked on it to friend, who at once proposed to seo tho insido of the tenant's house, if possible, so on ft pretence of buy- Ing tho place, ho walked over with the owner ono day recently. Tho inyatori- ou's tenant was sitting in tho house with tho door partly ajar when they approached, but immediately on seeing them ho arose, shut and locked the A vigorous appeal to open it so that tho proposed purchaser might look about and soo if it suited him, met with no response. They then tried to raise the windows, but found all securely fastened uud so they camo away utterly mystified. Some talk of a woman having been there when he first came, but who had suddenly disappeared, madb the matter look still more suspicious. Tho man's determination not to let ono ontor the house was thought by some to indicate that porhaps a murder had been committed and the evidence of tho crime was being kopt under lock and key by the mur- ioror.

Still another, theory, and perhaps tho truo mo, is that the man was an inventor or a per- etual motion crunk who wished to keep a curious public from inspecting his machine. But to-day a new chapter Is Tho mysterious stranger quietly took his departure last night aud has gono no ono knows whore. His cottage is empty and nothing re- nains to toll who or what its recent occu- mnt was. Charles Spoight, tho negro who escaped Tom tho calaboose, was recaptured to-day; at least, tho officers thought it was ho. Ho was released, jut hud only gotten a short diutnuco whou Iho mayor saw him and was about to have him arrested again as Chavled Speight, but Iho and tho officers both told tho mayor that ho was tho man, and lie was suffered to on his way rojoiciug. The citizens in tho residence portion adjacent to tho San Antonio and Aruusas Pass depot wore startled by tho roiorts of a revolver in quick succession ut tho residence occupied by Mrs. EinmaLogun, wife of Mr. Cliaiioy Logan. Upon entering the house tho horrible spectacle met tho eyes of tho spectators of both Mr. and Mrs.
