tiiaaatw tem Hrt), comes first. I do irr By Ira Winderman Staff Writer "John Wockenfuss says he's willing to put up with anything in baseball except being embarrassed. "That from a 37-year-old who's spending the 1986 season with a Class A minor-league team without a major league affiliation. "What the Philadelphia Phillies did to me last year was embarrassing," Wockenfuss said while his teammates with the Florida State League Miami Marlins were taking batting practice. "The year before 1984, I led the Phillies in home runs, RBI and average igainst lefthanders.

Then, last seal tn, they tell me during the season hey've decided to go with their younger players. In the middle of the season. What am I supposed to say to that in the middle of the season? They had me there as a bullpen catcher, carrying buckets of balls to the bullpen. They made me feel like a fool. Like a bum." By August, Wockenfuss had had enough.

He issued an ultimatum to the Phillies' management play me or release me. He walked out of that office without a major league job for the first time in 12 seasons. For the first time in 19 years, he was without a job in professional baseball. Now, 20 years after signing with the Washington Senators' organization, Wockenfuss is back to square one, playing for the Marlins. "The bus trips and the hotels, they really don't bother me," Wockenfuss (pronounced WAHK' en-fuss) said of his first season in Class A ball since 1969.

"But sometimes you can't find a towel in the hotels. And you only get one uniform. And because I lost my shoe contract, I only have two pairs and they've got holes in them." But with 12 years in the majors including 10 with the Detroit Tigers before being traded to the Phillies in 1984 with Glenn Wilson for Dave Bergman and Willie Hernandez Wockenfuss isn't looking for pity. Just a job. "Am I still hungry? Vou bet I'm still hungry," said Wockenfuss, stroking his palm across the gray that juts from the side of his Marlins cap.

"But I'm not planning to be here all year. By July, if I'm not out of here on a major league roster, then I'll leave." Wockenfuss said he learned of the Marlins through Derrel Thomas, the lnfielder who started last year with the Marlins before being signed by the Phillies late in the season. Class A ball, though, wasn't Wockenfuss' first choice. "With the 24-man roster, I would have thought a lot of teams could use a guy who could catch, play first and the outfield and pinch-hit. But I guess not," he said.

Wockenfuss spent most of the FSL Yankees lose on Special to lb NcwiSn-Senthwl FORT LAUDERDALE With one out in the top of 11th Inning, Winter Haven first baseman Tary Scott hit his third home run of the year over the left-field wall to give the Red Sox a 2-1 victory over the Fort Lauderdale Yankees Saturday night at Fort Lauderdale Stadium. Scott's homer came off Yankee reliever and losing pitcher Mike McClear (1-2). Bruce Lockhart was the winnet In relief. The Yankees took a 1-0 in the second inning when Johnny Haw offseason on the phone, running up a bill "in the thousands" without any takers. He tried to get a shot with the Red Sox, reporting to their spring training base in Winter Haven, but was turned away.

"I told them I didn't want meal money or expense pay." Then he contacted the Texas Rangers and his former i teammate Tom Grieve, whom he played with in the Senators' organization. "They said they couldn't help me, and then they had John Stearns out there and he couldn't even throw," Wockenfuss said. "Then they got Darrell Porter. Darrell Porter? I called Tom and he said it was because Darrell had played with championship teams. I told him I couldn't help it that I played for Detroit." Wockenfuss said his only hope now is replacing an injured catcher, but he "is not optimistic." "Five or six catchers have been injured already, and they're bringing up kids instead," Wockenfuss said, perhaps jealous of youth being served.

"Now my only hope is that some of the teams that have been complaining will go back to the 25-man roster. "I think, for some reason, the Phillies are bad-mouthing me around the league. Maybe I shouldn't have gone in there and asked for my release." Wockenfuss has improved his stock with his play with the Marlins. In 22 games, he is 24 for 86 (.279) with one home run and 21 RBI. There are some extenuating circumstances, though, that have kept him from playing even better, he said.

For the first time in years, Wockenfuss is being used as an everyday player. He also came into the season without the benefit of spring training because the Marlins are an independent team who organize just before the start of the FSL season. "I'm facing right-handers for the first time in years," said Wockenfuss, a career .260 hitter in the majors. "And I'm only now hitting live pitching for the first time since my release. "Last year, at Philadelphia, only batting 37 times, and only against the top relievers in the league, that was embarrassing.

But here, I know my swing will come around." Hopefully before the next major league catcher is injured. Hopefully by the time the first team switches back to the 25-man roster. Hopefully by July. Until then, there is still hope for John Wockenfuss. "Sometimes I'll turn around and look into the stands to see if there are any scouts tonight," he said.

"Usually you can pick out a few. Usually there are a few guys with radar guns." llth-inning homer kins scored from third on a Jason Maas groundout. The run was unearned. The Red Sox tied the game in the sixth when Angel Gonzalez singled to left field with the bases loaded to score Brady Anderson. The same two teams play today at 1 p.m.
