Pittsburgh knocked Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick out of the game, but Lee Suggs and Dave Meyer wouldn't let the Panthers knock the second-ranked Hokies out of the national championship picture Saturday. X-rays showed Vick's right ankle wasn't broken, but he will be evaluated this afternoon after the swelling has gone down.

"We don't think it's that severe," trainer Mike Goforth said, terming Vick's status as day to day pending the evaluation and the start of treatment. "I'll do anything in my power not to miss it," Vick said of Saturday's game against the Hurricanes at Miami, which likely will eliminate the loser from the national championship picture. Meyer replaced the injured Vick and completed three consecutive passes for first downs on the final drive that led to Carter Warley's 27-yard field goal with 16 seconds that gave the Hokies a 37-34 victory. Suggs rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns for Virginia Tech, which extended its regular-season winning streak to 19 games. Vick, a leading contender for the Heisman Trophy, sprained his ankle when he has sacked late in the first half and didn't return.

Pittsburgh lost despite four touchdown passes by quarterback John Turman, three to Antonio Bryant. I 1 'Cats win on final play Sam Simmons caught a desperation 45-yard touchdown pass from Zak Kustok that was tipped by a teammate as Northwestern beat host Minnesota 41 -35 on the final play Saturday. But strong winds, gusting to nearly 50 mph, took the punch out of the passing game.
