MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL C8 Daily Press, Sunday, May 20, 1990 i Pilots report Byths numbers if A '4 1 1 a Cannons use multiple weapons, turn back Pilots 3-2 in 11 innings PENINSULA PILOTS TEAM BATTING Today's game pitching shoulders. William Manager -r, Gary Denbo knew he couldn't ask a guy who had just driven 16 hours from Fort Lauderdale, to go nine innings four hours after he arrived at War Memorial Stadium. Mark Marris, moved from the Fort Lauderdale Yankees of the Florida Prince William at Pilots, 2 p.m. run in 13 innings this season, took the loss to go 1-2.

Marris gave up one hit and two in three handed. Scott Lodgek was scheduled to be the starter, but has developed a sore shoulder and will miss his next two or three turns. Mullins, who has worked as a long reliever, started and pitched a decent 4 innings. NOTES: Tonight's pitchers: Prince William right-hander Ed Martel (0-5, 6.00) vs. Peninsula righty Rick Bal- abon (4-0, 2.81).

Bailey, who has four of the seven home; runs will be evaluated on a day-to-daybasis, Manag- er Jim Nettles Lem Pilkinton moved from I third base to assume Bailey's position, while newly acquired Mark Brakebill plays the other corner. Starting right-hander Scott Lodgek will miss at least his next two turns in the rotation while his sore shoulder is evaluated. FEAR OF LIGHTS Considering how close the light poles are to the playing field at War Memorial Stadium, it's not all that surprising to see a foul ball strike them. But when Mickey 1 Rivers Jr. fouled off an 0-2 pitch from Oscar Rivas that struck the light fixture, he scared the daylights out of his Lynchburg Red Sox teammates.

A bulb shattered and glass spilled, on the Lynchburg dugout, but no -one was hurt. When Prince Wil- ham's Russ Davis hit a home run over the left- field wall Thursday night, -the ball broke a car's windshield. The owner informed Pilots General lots to four hits in 11 innings foj- a 3-2 Carolina League 'victory Saturday night. -f I The Pilots (10-26) got their fast hit in the sixth inning on a Mark Brake-bill single. Relievers James Moody and Mike Gardella struck out nine Peninsula batters in the final four innings.

I In losing their second extra-inning game in this homestand, the Pilots gave up an unearned rim in the 11th on a passed ball charged to catcher Dan Barbara. John Viera, who went 3-for-5 and scored two runs, walked with one out. He then stole second, his third of the game and 17th of the season without being caught. After taking third on J.T. Snow's fly ball to center, Viera scored when Barbara couldn't handle a low-and-away pitch from Rod Poissant.

After the Cannons scored two in the fifth off starter Ron Mullins, the Pilots tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Delvin Thomas tripled and scored on Jesus Tavarez's groundout. After that, nothing. Art Canestro, Moody and Gardella gave up only a combined three walks.

Moody struck out all six of the batters he faced. "We got an outstanding perform mance from our bullpen, James Moody in particular," Denbo said. But.more often than not, such logic can be tossed out the window. Case in point: the Denver Zephyrs' Dale Sveum and Joe Redfield, neither of whom played well in the Tides' 9-3 vicr tory Saturday night at Met Park. The switch-hitting Sveum was on his way to a promising career with the I Milwaukee Brewers when he broke his left shin at the end of the 1988 season.

The Brewers are already solid at third base with Gary Sheffield, though, and have no immediate reason to glance Redf ield's way.
