UAH I told me, 'You alvays get such big money for a character actor. Vhy is datr When he first saw Brothers at the South Coast Repertory Theater in California, he casually mentioned that someday, if he could find the time, he would like to direct the play. "The play had problems, which we all knew, and I thought I would enjoy working with the author on editing it," O'Connor says.

"Then, when we were canceled, the producer called me up to remind that, well, now I had plenty of time to direct. I've been offered the leads in Inherit the Wind and Death of a Salesman, but the idea of doing something new and promising appealed to me. "I always said that if I went back to the theater, I'd never do matinees. Well, here I am, doing eight shows a week and not thinking much beyond getting the play into New York. If it works, we'll have a hit and maybe a movie after that, and who knows what else.

Later, when he traveled to Ireland with a younger brother, he enrolled at University College in Dublin and continued acting in productions there, until he was spotted and picked up for a professional company. He learned his craft in Ireland, working with such actors as Cyril Cusack, Hilton Edwards and Michael MacLiammoir. "It was a very gay life, in the old-fashioned sense of the word," he says, "and I fell for it completely." He made his New York debut in 1958 in an off-Broadway production of Ulysses in Nighttown, which starred Zero Mostel and was directed by O'Connor's good friend, Burgess Meredith.

In 1960, a part in A Fever in the Blood launched his movie career of 27 films. He did well in Hollywood, playing detectives and officers in the military in such movies as Cleopatra, Point Blank and Marlowe. "When I was doing In Harm's Way for Otto Preminger." Then producer Norman Lear, who had nursed All in the Family along the network channels, phoned to tell him that the show had at last been picked up by CBS and that he should return to the States to begin taping the series. "Norman knew it would work," he reminisces, "but I didn't.

It was the fourth pilot fcr a TV series I had made, and none of the others including one called Nightwatch that Robert Altman had directed in Chicago had been picked up. All in the Family had bounced around for a long time. We made the first pilot in 1969, but nobody wanted to touch it. At one point, ABC was interested but later dropped the idea. I didn't bold much hope for it, but Nancy kept saying I should give it a try, so we went back to the States, leaving our car and most of our furniture in Rome, because I expected to be back there soon."
