C4 Oct 20, 1990 Daily Press, Saturday, United Way pushes past half-way mark By LISA DANIELS Staff Writer Though officials from the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula are pleased that with $3.3. million they passed the half-way mark in their quest for $6.3 million this week, they remain concerned that the community's portion of the campaign is lagging. "It's kind of sluggish," said C. Wayne Williamson, campaign director, who said that only $783,000, or 24 percent of the community campaign goal of $3.2 million, had been met. "Maybe people are sitting back thinking that it's going to get done." The community goal is low in part because about 500 of the 890 businesses holding in-house fund drives as part of the community campaign still have not reported how much they have collected, he said on Friday.

Williamson said he was pleased, however, at the progress of the two other legs of the United Way campaign: the campaign at Newport News Shipbuilding and the Combined Federal Campaign. So far, shipyard employees had donated $1.6 million, or 94 percent, of their $1.7 million goal. "I'm just really impressed," said Williamson. As part of the Combined Federal Campaign, military and federal employees had reached $974,000, or 70 percent, of their $1.4 million goal. "That's really outstanding, considering that 30 to 50 percent of the local military population is overseas," said Troops deployed from Hampton Roads to the Persian Gulf number more than 30,000.

As the campaign nears its Nov. 15 deadline, Williamson is encouraging citizens to give to the United Way through their workplaces or private donations. 1 I -iin'i i i i ajL 1 Vanity college tags sell, but not enough buddy NORRISStatf photographer Conyngham crew honored The Navy honored 78 crew members from the Norfolk-based guided missile destroyer USS Conyngham Friday for their heroism and actions to save the ship May 8 during a fire that killed one man. RICHMOND (AP) Virginia license plates bearing college and university logos are selling more quickly now that the schools have a financial incentive, but no institution has sold enough of the tags to start earning money. Legislation approved by the 1990 General Assembly allows the colleges and universities to collect $15 for each plate sold after the first 1,000. The money will be used for scholarships. "We have 53,000 alumni in Virginia, so it could have a big impact with 53,000 people riding around the highways with their Virginia Tech plates," Virginia Tech spokesman David Nutter said Thursday. "I'm not really nervous, but we are worried," said Marion "Pee Wee" Bolden, who works in the electrical department. Bolden, who has been working on the Boise for several months, said he has been following news reports of the congressional debate on the Seawolf submarine, the Navy's newest class of attack submarines. Newport News was the lead design yard for the Seawolf. But the Navy has already cut back on the Seawolf from a projected building rate of three per year to two per year. Now some New England congressmen have proposed giving a monopoly on future submarine construction to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, Newport News' Groton, competitor.

After the christening, the sub will remain in the yard for outfitting and testing. The Boise is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in July 1992.
