D4 Daily Press, Saturday, Dec. 15, 1990 Postcards from schools WTKR news fares well in ratings; WVEC slips To whom this may concern: Hello. I'm 10 years old and I can't imagine what it's like not knowing what will happen if a shot is fired. The only thing that I can say is have hope. Maybe this argument will simmer down so that all of you can make it home safely.

Sincerely, Bruce Sharita Bradby Joseph Pryweller Broadcast news 71 Dear U.S. Troops: I just wanted to let you know, that everyone here is thinking of all of you. We will always remember you as you strive to do your duty to your country. Thank you for all the good work over there. Come back soon. We miss you! Hello Desert Shield! Merry Christmas. I felt I should communicate and express my feelings.

I want to say that we support what you're doing. Hang in there! We miss you. To all the people in Saudi Arabia. We love you. Enjoy your Christmas.

It sometimes pays to be aggressive. Just ask WTKR, Channel 3, the local television news station that made some bold moves this year. The CBS affiliate, with co-anchors Ed Hughes and Jane Gardner, won the November ratings at 6 p.m. this week for the first time in six years. It also came out on top for four out of five locally produced newscasts, winning three of those time slots handily.

WAVY, Channel 10's ferry Zahn and Alveta Ewell continued their strong ratings lead for the 1 1 p.m. newscast and held steady. WVEC, Channel 13, slipped the most including losing the lead for its 5:30 p.m. newscast to WTKR's "The Cosby Show" but hung close to make the 6 p.m. newscast a three-station race.

But it was WTKR that had the most to cheer about. Maybe it was the hiring of Gardner, weatherman Duane Harding and sports anchor Bob Rathbun this year. Maybe it was reporter Betty Francis' live reports from the Persian Gulf, which were the most comprehensive of any local station's. Maybe it was the new music and graphics. Who knows.

"I'd like to think it was the entire package," said WTKR General Manager Christopher Here are some of the ratings results from Arbitron which surveyed the four-week period from Oct. 30 to Nov. 27. The numbers are in share points, which measure the percentage of households watching television that are tuned to a station. Noon: WTKR, 43; WVEC, 16; WAVY, 12.

5 p.m.: WTKR's "Live at Five," 32; WAVY's "First News" and WVEC's "The Challengers," 16. 5:30 p.m.: WTKR's "The Cosby Show," 33; WVEC's "13 News at 5:30," 25; WAVYs "Instant Recall," 13. 6 p.m.: WTKR, 27; WVEC, 25; WAVY, 24. 11 p.m.: WAVY, 29; WTKR, 19; WVEC, 17. Central Command: Don't expect WAVY to hire a Peninsula reporter any time soon, maybe not even in the next decade.

Both WTKR and WVEC have two people working from Peninsula bureaus. WAVY has nobody, not since Andy Fox left in June to pursue a run at Congress. But WAVY General Manager Douglas Adams said several weeks ago that the NBC affiliate has no Happy holidays to the men and women serving in the Saudi Arabian desert. Casey, Crystal and Cindy Hi honey! Merry Christmas! Jon and Postcards from home reporter openings. And last week, WAVY News Director David Overton said hiring a Peninsula reporter isn't a major concern. Reporters can cover all of Hampton Roads from the station's Portsmouth stuT dios, he said. "Having a Peninsula reporter is more of a public-relations move than anything else," Overton said. Overton added that co-anchor Alveta Ewell and reporter Art Franklin live on the Peninsula.

"They keep us informed," he said. Maybe he's right. The station hasn't missed any big Peninsula stories in recent memory. But maybe it's missing other; smaller stories. On Tuesday, for instance, WVEC ran stories on its 6 p.m.

newscast about the public auction next week of NewMarkefj, Shopping Center and the closing of a Mercedes-Benz plant in Hampton. WAVY didn't. Christmas station WXRI-FM (107.7) in Windsor has been playing contemporary Christmas tunes all month. Now it wants to rock 'n' roll all night. Tonight from 9 to 1 1 p.m., the station will present its "Rock 'n' Roll Christmas Show," with Christmas hits from pop-rock radio.

The songs should include the Ronettes' "Sleigh Ride," Bobby Vee's "Rock Around the Christmas Tree," and Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock," said General Manager Ray Fowler; WXRI, which has about 1,900 Christmas songs in its collection, will play holiday music until Dec. 25, Fowler said. After that, the station will revert to a contemporary Christian format, he added. station WKEZ-FM (94. 1) in York County has been collecting money this month to help a York County family that lost its home and many possessions in a Dec.

1 fire. The station has asked that listeners donate items for the Tinney family at Oyster Point Crafts and Curios, on Route 17 near Old Oyster Point Road in Newport News. Listeners have donated wardrobes and many household items, said WKEZ Program Director Tim Morgan. Listeners are being asked to donate until Dec. 24.
