C7 HAMPTON ROADS Sale lina stores, Ribble said. Originally held in a tent on Virginia Beach Boulevard, the sale became so popular. Hit or Miss eventually incorporated merchandise from all of its nearly 600 stores across the country. Ribble said the company starts planning the next sale a few months after each year's event ends. By July, managers are busy hiring local temporary employees and gathering merchandise.

She began setting up for this year's sale on Wednesday, Ribble said. She would not say how much Hit or Miss earns from the sale. Based in Stoughton, Hit or Miss operates in 34 states. The company has five Hampton Roads stores, all located on the Southside except for a store in Williamsburg Outlets Mall just outside of Williamsburg. Hit or Miss moved the sale to the Pavilion in 1985, Ribble said.

This year's sale will take up the entire building more than 75,000 square feet. The Hit or Miss tent sale starts at 6 a.m. Saturday and lasts through August 19. Continued from C6 screaming." customers camping out in line as early as 2 a.m., waiting for the doors to open, Ribble said. Experienced shoppers come dressed in their swim suits so they can try on clothes in the aisles.

"You've got to see it to believe it," Ribble said. "These (July) numbers seem to tell us that the retailers that are better at selling than others are posting strong gains no matter what the economy is doing," Cooper said. "But the more average ones, particularly the big department stores, are seeing sales slow along with the economy." Large department stores, which sell such items as furniture and appliances, are suffering more from the slowdown in housing and durables sales than the specialty retailers. rr-.

Retail Continued from C6 July, advancing over even their own strong June sales growth of 24 percent. Kemper Financial Services analyst Catherine Cooper attributed The Gap's gains to a good start on fall clothing sales. Shearson Lehman Hutton analyst Stacy, Ruchlamer said July sales in general were in line with expectations. Foreign currency NEW YORK (AP) Foreign Exchange, New York prices. "It would be a lot more in-covenient and a lot more expensive" to use alternate fqrms of shipping, said Nancy Harner, warehouse manager for Micro-. Serve, a computer retailer in Hampton.

Conte's Bike Fitness Center in Newport News uses UPS to receive about 60 percent of its parts, said Vice President David Conte. Conte said he has already started getting shipments through alternate shippers from suppliers who don't want ages to get waylayed during a possible strike. He said the facility will be designed for older people who need help with some daily tasks but who do not require intensive medical supervision.

"It will be assisted living," Dechert said. "Our people will help them get out of bed, get dressed, help them with medications." Dechert already operates 12 such homes in Tidewater, but the Governors Inn would be his first on the Peninsula. The City Council must still approve Dechert's proposal, but the Oyster Point Development Corp. has given its approval, Apelt said. He said the home will have little impact on traffic, and said-its location, near the edge of the park and the Bernard Village subdivision, should be convenient for residents.

Apelt said the development corporation also approved plans by Automatic Equipment Sales of Norfolk, Inc. to buy a four-acre plot on Middle Ground Boulevard and build a 20,000 to 25,000 square-foot showroom and warehouse. Automatic Equipment, a heating and air conditioning equipment firm, will pay $340,000 for the site, which is now vacant, Apelt said. 1.5936 Ijm 1.5930 1.5878 1.5920 1.5868 30-dav fwd .6275 .6295 60-doytwd .6277 .6298 90-dav fwd .6281 .6302 Vuanclnu .08961 .08961 11.16 11.16 NOTE: ECU European Currency Unit, a basket of Europedn currencies. "Some people are looking at the prices and driving off," she said Wednesday.
