Mel Hein, one of professional football's greatest centers, was signed today as an assistant to Head Coach Norman (Red) Strader of the Brooklyn-New York Yankee entry in the All America Football Conference. Hein, 39-years-old former Washington State star, played 15 seasons for the New York Giants of the National League, from 1931 to 1945.

Known as the "iron man" of pro football in the days when players had to be standouts on both offense, and defense, Hein was named 'All-National League center for eight consecutive seasons from 1933 to 1940. In 1938 he was chosen the league's most valuable player. Hein decided to pro football in 1942 and accepted a position as athletic director and head coach at Union College in Schenectady, N. Y. But when the school abandoned 'football because of the war, he obtained permission to rejoin the Giants for the next three Pet.
