Edmund G. Zimmerer, Iowa Commissioner of Public Health. Some 1,000 Iowans are presently enrolled in 40 courses around the State, and seven courses have already been completed in this pilot program, Dr. Zimmerer said. Medical Self-Help is designed at present to train 5.600 Iowans, who in turn will teach the 16-hour course to thousands of fellow Iowans.

"In nuclear attack, it may be days or weeks before a doctor could reach every community or private fallout shelter. This program teaches you how to take care of your own medical problems," he explained. The Self-Help program is administered by the Iowa State Department of Health and supported by Director Ray C. Stiles, Civil Defense Office; Superintendent Paul Johnston's Office of Public Instruction; and Dr. Marion Alberts, Chairman of the Iowa Medical Society's Civil Defense Committee.

Field instruction responsibility for the course is assigned to the Division of Public Health Nursing, headed by Miss Mattie Brass. Her Nurse Supervisors are located in Manchester, Ft. Dodge, Spencer, Council Bluffs, Washington and Des Moines. The current success of the Medical instruction at county and city levels is attributed by Dr. Zimmerer to the cooperation among County Public Health Nurses, Civil Defense Nurses, Civil Defense Directors, and other civic minded persons.

He praised the students, who, through training and inclination, will be prepared to teach the course after the pilot phase has been evalu- ted this summer. Also cited were the doctors who are functioning both as training sponsors and classroom counselors. Iowans who want this training and will accept teaching assignments should contact their nearest Public Health Nurse, Civil Defense Director, or County Medical Society. The 12 lessons taught are: Radioactive Fallout and Shelter- Hygiene, Sanitation and Vermin Control; Water and Food; Shock, Bleeding and Bandaging; Artificial Respiration; Fractures and Splint ing; Transportation of the Injured Burns; Nursing Care of the Sick and Injured; Infant and Child Care and Emergency Childbirth.
