Telepbona Nambere, Cumberland 43 dltorlal-Room Cumberland 44 Tuesday, Jan. 16, 1900. EX GOVERNOR CHURCHILL WARNS THE DEMOCRATS. Ex Governor J. J.

Churchill of Arkansas, who has given the expansion question much thought warns the Democratic party, to which he belongs, that it is useless to war against an accomplished fact as his views on this question are calculated to attract national attention we reproduce his statement: He said: "I am a loyal Democrat, but an American citizen and stand by the flag and soldier who is fighting for it. It is an accomplished fact, beyond dispute, that expanHion has come to stay, and it is of no use for the leaders of onr party to rail against it. The Senate has ratified the treaty of peace with Spain and the matter is settled. The islands have passed into onr hands nd all that Congress has to do is to ave them a republican form of and that gove rnment will iTive them the Mime liberty and freinl-ld whTuli we enjoy. It is Democratic xjtnne and we can not honorably recede from it.

When Moses led the Is-raelities out of Egypt into the Holy Land, they found other nations there, on whom they made war, conquered aud imposed a government over them without asking their consent The Israeliite6 were the chosen people of the Lord and I presume thty had his sanction for the act. We are now im posing a government over Puetro Rico without asking itsconsunt Wo hardly realize the extent and magnitude of our Asiatic possessions. They are be yond the powers of description with rich and fertile sou equal to any in the world, and when we introduce American ideas and new methods of agriculture, her productions of sugar, coffee rioe and tobacco will be double what ere now, and when we build tu" canal our trade tiii japan ana nina will be mil.ibns to where it is now one. You will then bo longer see any 4c or cotton, and overproduction of that staple will be a thing of the past. "I do not sao for my life how any Southern man can take any other po sition than for expansion.

Now, a few words of waruing to the Democratic party. When we meet in convention we must adopt a platform that all Democrats, North, 3outh, Eat and West, can stand upon, for without unity we can not hope to win, for we must not drive any Democrats from the party. The people want a square Democratic platform aud a square Democratic fight, and when we place a candidate upon that, platform we want him to be orthodox and Simon pure, without taint Oi tincture of Populism, whom every Democrat can give a most hearty support. Imperialism means nothing, and is simply used to scare the ignorant. Our is planted lu the Pnilippines, and no one is going to haul it down, aud tin-re it will remain as a beacon light to all Asiatic nations.

A STRONG TEAM. Tne Jackson correspondent of the Vicksburg Dispatch has benn watching the legislators at work and pays the following handsome compliments to Representative Brown and Senator Clinton. "Mr Brown of Adam, is develop. ing into an active member aud is 'catching on' at a very lively rate which would indicate that he is to attain no small amount of powi when the law-makers get into fvrr day working harness. "Senator J.

A. Clinton of is ono of the most graceful orators in the Senate aud when he rises to ipeatf that body always gives him close attention. Mr. Clinton has never at tempted to pose as a loader, but his advice is generally heeded and his judgment rarely questioned." The correspondent should ki-op his eyes on Hon Calvin S. Bennett, of Adams, he is one of the Representatives who will be heard from I nfore the present session is over.
