A I I I WEDNESDAY, JULY II, 1773 Nicknames: Where do they come from? There can be little dispute that Unky Sundt is the best known Unky in town. And Cluny Dingman surely has a monopoly on her nickname. Where did their nicknames (and those of other well-known. Tucsonians) come from? Unky owes it all to his mother. He was named for an Wilson Stout, and Unky seemed handier for a baby than Wilson, Cluny owes everything to the Junior League.

Or rather, to leaguers who named her. "It mast have been 20 or 30 years ago, during the Junior League Follies," she says. "My name was Clara Brown then, and one night the pipes backstage began to leak. I crawled under them for a repair job and that's where the name got started. A book called 'Cluny about a lady plumber, was popular at the time.

When my friends saw me under the pipes they laughed. 'Why, Cluny So Cfifoy it has been, ever since. College compadres pinned the names "Doc" and "Sam" Si two prominent Tucsonians. Before he was Doc, everyone knew John Braddock as Jack. But once at university, the last name of Braddock was capsu- lized into'a lasting nickname.

Crary (Margaret) got her well- known name of Sam at Stanford. "My maiden name Houston, so it was a natural," she says. Radio and television heroes had a hand in the of Biff Baker and Monte DuVal. Giles Engagements Becker-Glover SusajkBecker.and R. David a November The brijfejlect, daughter of Mr.

"I managed to hold my own, and since a' TV program called "Biff Baker USA" was popular at the time, Don began calling me Biff." Friends of Merlin DuVal pegged him with Monte, in honor of a radio character, Monte DuVal. He was the antagonist of radio hero Jack Armstrong, the All- American Boy. And little sisters who couldn't pronounce "sister" took care of Cissy Dodson and Siddy Young.

Siddy (Dorothy) has been called by her nickname for so long that she often exclaims, "I don't have the faintest idea!" when asked about her real name. Cissy Dodson has always been Cissy. "Even the nuns used my nickname in school, instead of my real name, which is Eleanore," she explains. Beeno and Joe Joe Beeno Hill and Joe-Joe Owens have their families to thank for their nicknames. Beeno is a derivative of Vino, a liquid refreshment his mother wanted after his birth.

But the children at school couldn't quite get the hang of "Vino." Since they knew his real name was Ben, that was thrown into the mixer with "Vino" and out came Beeno. Sherwood Owens is a junior, so when his favorite stuffed animal was named Joe-Joe, the name was switched to him. And it stuck. Manny Drachman's real name is Roy Emmanuel, but his nickname is so well known he includes it in his telephone listing. "Everyone calls me Manny," he says.

He is named after his father Roy and grandfather Emmanuel. It was too confusing to have two Roy's in the house, so he took the shortened version of Emmanuel. Kokie Chipman was a spunky five-year-old who decided she didn't like her name Cora. "It was way too dignified it just didn't suit me." So she changed her name to Kokie, which she has been ever since. 7-2-01-36 handcut crystal from Romania Handmade stem crystal iced food server and wine goblet.

10-4 Meitchie Allen was named, in a round-about way, by her grandfather, who's from Switzerland. "He would ask 'How's the little while my mother was pregnant. So, after my arrival, mother asked him the Swiss-German word for 'little girl'. I've been 'Meitchie' ever since." Moe doesn't know Moe Ollason isn't certain how his nickname got started. "There are several versions, all pretty vague, but I've bee Moe since grade school." Even his mother doesn't remember how Lawrence became a Moe, but Moe it is.

A cartoon character inspired Pudge DuMont's nickname. "Our high school sorority in El Paso insisted that all members use names from cartoons. My friend was called 'Alley I opted for the cute little dog named Pudgey in the Betty Boop cartoon," she Explains with a laugh. Few people know her real name Minerva. "My family calls me Mimi, which I like, but there's no way to get rid of 'Pudge' at this point!" And what about that dynamic duo Buzz and Bumps? Buzz (Shirley) Tribolet says the origin of her nickname must remain a secret.

the hard way Bumps, however, came by his the hard way. He rolled off the sofa at the tender age of six months, and his father tagged him "Bumps." Bumps has stuck, and no one calls him Charles. A few Navy buddies call him Trib, to add to the confusion. An aunt who didn't like the name Mary Teresa nicknamed her niece "BantaMar." "She got the idea from a sign along the beach, and thought the name would go nicely with my last name," says Mary Laos. Her maiden name was Alvey, so 'Banta Mar Alvey' it was, for many years.

Now it's simply shortened to Banta Laos, and "there's absolutely no rhyme or reason to HI" Whoops, mustn't forget Toops. Warren "Toops" Culbertson, a Green Valley resident, says that wherever he has lived, he has always been called Toops. He owes it all to his two older sisters, who used to read him "Chicken Little." In their version of the tale, a chicken called "Tup- pins" caught their attention, and they switched his name to the baby. Tuppins, he remained, until eighth grade, when it was amalgamated into Toops. Mrs.
