ain Going Xive 9 Ag One-Hour, Tested Format By JACK GAVER NEW YORK, May 14 (IB--The ardent exponents of live telp- vision over filmed TV shows may feel that the decision that Jackie Gleason revert to his original live one-hour type of program on CBS next season 11 is a victory for their side, but actually the matter cannot be so clearly defined. There are a number of points to consider. Had Gleason, for example, started Ills TV career doing hall-hour "Honeymooners" situation comedies, such as he 1ms confined himself lo this season, there wouldn't have been much change In his status simply be- CHUM! he switched, from live to film presentation or because he suddenly hail some (Irsl-rato competition such as half of a Perry Como one-hour show on NBC, Had Gleason been known and highly successful merely as a 30-minute situation series comedian, it is reasonable to suppose that he could have floated along successfully for several seasons, as have any number of persons such as Lucille Ball and Dcsi Araaz, Eve Arden, Bill Bendix, even though he went from live to film presen- tntion. ranae literioui hi6 aDautime By CYNTHIA LOWRY NEW YORK--Most of us working stiffs, who dash from the house in the morning to catch the 8:11 and buckle into our solid television some time after 7 p.m., are missing a wonderful half-world which seems to beat little or no re'" lationship to afterdark viewing or, as a matter of fact, to "life itself. Most of daytime television viewers are women.

And if women who watch the commercials should garner a strange idea of how the other 60 million women of the nation live--as well as the remaining 60 million men--don't blame the little woman. I should think her discontent with two items--her house dresses and her kitchen--would be unbearable. In the marvelous world of commercial television, every housewife, inside or outside commercials and with the notable exception of Mrs. Ralph Kramden, inhabits a kitchen roughly the size of the flight deck of the USS Forrestal, in which has been placed every possible new, gleaming cooking aid. And the ladies who inhabit them are dressed, whether to whip up a quick breakfast or a hearty, jiffy, meal for their happy family, in garments impeccably pressed, custom-made and suitable lor' a matinee.

In the soap operas, of course, a good guide book is a must. I dropped into a half dozen and couldn't understand anything that was going on except that everybody was full of trouble--mostly unrequited love and faithlessness--and that most children are being badly misunderstood. Yes, indeed, workers of the world, if you haven't had a "daytime television tour, take a day off and count it vaca- time well spent. It's a strange and mysterious world, foreign than the casbah. Psychological Drama Joseph Gotten and Ruth Roman have strong disagreements over Cotten's brother, played by Van Johnson, in "The Bottom oi the Bottle," modem-day drama oi the Southwest.

Still Biting His Fingernails ELVIS HAS ARRIVED -AND HE'S'SCARED' By FRED DANZIG United Press Staff (Virre spur dent NEW YORK (UP)--Comedians are starting to make jokes about Elvis Presley and his "rip-'em-up" style ol singing. Someone chalked this note on a New York sidewalk recently: "Elvis Presley, Go Home." In short, Presley has arrived. Elvis, an admirer of the But Gleason went into television and achieved an almost hysterical success as something much move than a 30-minute situation comedy player. He was--and is--what the highbrows call a protean performer; he has more strings to his bow than Robin Hood had arrows. Maybe he isn't actually unique, but he has very few peers, like him or not. "The Golden Ham," to borrow the title of Jim Bishop's recent biography of the great man, published by Simon and Schuster, was A variety snow- star of extraordinary ability. The people loved "Honeymoon- era" sketches when they came along during the years of the one-hour variety show, but they also loved thc characters that Jackie portrayed--Reggie van Gleason, the bartender, the poor soul, the loudmouth, name several.

This observer considers it a fact, and has so expressed himself in the past, that Gleason did not arrive at the point of having his Saturday night kingship threatened this season simply because he went to film or because Como came up with the first stiff NBC competition he has had to face. It has been the contention here that the reaction set in the season before, prior to Como's one-hour opposition and to Gleason's shift to nothing but the film half-hour "Honeymooners." It began even if the dubious rating figures might not have shown it at the time, when the comedian got into the habit during the 1954-55 season of letting his other characterization go by the boards lo concen- a on "Honeymooners" sketches. These were. live. Also they ran for some 40 minutes as against the approximately 35 minutes they have been allowed thiu season on the 30-minute- filmed program.

They were better In the longer form than the shorter. But the important thing is that, whatever the whether filmed or" live, it was just too much of a good thing, to say nothing of the fact that fans missed the other Gleason characters. It is possible to overdo something to the point of no return, even in the case i von like. AHS Student-Actors SHOWTIME GUIDE --Globe-Times Stall Pholo "Heaven Can Wait."
