State Daily Press. Friday, March 15, 1985 A3 Suspected drug pilot's wife indicted in death ROANOKE (AP Olea I. Thrashor fir It 1 5 an unidentified person sometime between Feb. 25 and March 9 to kidnap and kill Nelson J. King.

King was identified as the pilot of the plane that crashed in Carroll County on Oct. 17. He is being held in a Florida, jail on federal drug warrants and is expected to be returned to Virginia. The plane, which police believe was owned by Wallace Thrasher, was loaded with more than 500 pounds of high-grade South American marijuana. The crash killed a second man, whose body was badly burned and who remains unidentified.

The criminal solicitation indictments charge that Mrs. Thrasher tried to persuade an unidentified person to abduct and murder King on or about Feb. 25. The remaining two criminal-solicitation indictments both charge Mrs. Thrasher with trying to persuade someone to kill King on or about March 6.

Wallace Thrasher, 44, is missing and is supposed to have died in a plane crash in Jamaica. But federal authorities say he may be alive, and they have obtained a warrant for his arrest on drug conspiracy and smuggling charges. The government also has seized some $400,000 worth of his property from Mrs. Thrasher under federal racketeering laws allowing such seizure if it is suspected the property was bought with proceeds from criminal activity. The Thrashers have been subjects of a six-month state and federal investigation of international drug smuuggling into southwest Virginia.

The investigation began in October 1984 after the airplane carrying marijuana crashed in Carrroll County. The airplane's ownership papers were faked, but Wallace Thrasher was identified as the person who paid bills on the airplane when it was in a hanger at Roanoke Regional Airport. Mrs. Thrasher claims her husband died on Nov. 5 in an airplane crash in Jamaica.

Investigators who were seeking Thrasher for questioning about the crash in Carroll County have not been able to confirm that a crash occurred in Jamaica. Federal authorities believe Thrasher's death was faked so he could avoid possible prosecution on smuggling charges. has been indicted on a charge of conspiring to kill a man who allegedly was aboard an airplane loaded with marijuana that crashed in Carroll County in October 1984. She is the wife of Wallace Thrasher, a suspected drug pilot reported killed in a Jamaican plane crash in November 1984. Federal authorities believe the report was faked and Thrasher is in hiding.

Mrs. Thrasher, 28, was arrested Wednesday night on indictments returned earlier in the day by a Wythe County grand jury charging the mother of two with conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit abduction and four charges of criminal solicitation. She is alleged to have conspired with Olga L. Thrasher husband believed alive 1 I if- Farm income expected to decrease by 55 ,0 Police say gunman fired on bystanders in Chesapeake slaying "'(asm. J.

Si "-fc" miff s. it' 1 A A RICHMOND (AP) Virginia farmers this year will take in less than half of 1984's net income, because they will plant fewer acres and get less for what they grow, according to recent projections by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Total net farm income in the state is expected to be $149 million in 1985 if the weather is good, the department said. In 1984, the total net farm income was $330 million. The projected 55 percent decline was attributed largely to anticipated changes in inventory farmers' planning to reduce the number of acres they plant and to lower commodity prices, according to Earl A.

Finch, environmental resource economist for the department. Total farm income from crops and livestock is expected to be $1.6 billion 4 percent less than 1984, Finch said. With the addition of government support programs, gross farm income is predicted to be about $1.9 billion 3.5 percent less than in 1984. Production costs are expected to increase almost 2 percent, from $1.67 billion in 1984 to $1.83 billion in 1985. Tobacco production is expected to be hardest hit.

The total acreage allotted to farmers this year has declined 14 percent, while the assessment price paid to the farmer-owned support program increased from 7 cents to 25 cents a pound. Farmers can expect to receive $1.05 for every dollar invested in agriculture this year, Finch said. In 1973, which was a good agriculture year, farmers received $1.44 cents for every dollar they spent. t'UV if JV i 4T of a firearm in a felony or in an attempted felony. The attempted murder counts stemmed from the firing on the porch, Cenzalli said.

Police were called to the area earlier Wednesday when Gary Kidd and Lewis were reported fighting. That evening, as Lewis walked down the street, the Kidds and Castillo allegedly ambushed him, police said. Lewis was unarmed, Cenzalli said. George W. Warren, who lives in a house between the Kidds and Lewis, said the radio had been stolen from Castillo, and the Kidds believed Lewis had taken it.

Warren said Castillo began shooting toward the Lewis home with the Warren home in the line of fire just after Lewis was shot. "I was about to go crazy," he said. "I didn't know what to do. I knew then that they had got David. I didn't know how bad.

I was scared to go out there. Castillo was in the yard shooting at everyone." CHESAPEAKE (AP) One of three gunmen who allegedly ambushed and killed a 20-year-old man fired at several people, including children, standing on the porch of the victim's home, police said Thursday. But none of the seven people on the porch was injured, said Detective Pete Cenzalli. William David Lewis, who lived at the house, was killed Wednesday night after the gunmen followed him to a ditch where he tried to hide and shot him repeatedly, witnesses said. The shootings apparently stemmed from a radio stolen six months earlier, Cenzalli said.

Robert Alexander Kidd 21, a neighbor of Lewis, was charged with murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of use of a firearm in a felony, Cenzalli said. His brother, Gary Dean Kidd, 20, was charged with murder and use of a firearm. Francisco Galindo Castillo, 20, described as a friend of the Kidds, was charged with murder, seven counts of attempted murder and eight counts of use UPI photo Chilly rescue 11 plead guilty to role in drug-distribution ring Animal control officers assist a keeper at the Mill Mountain Zoo near Roanoke as he places an owl in a cooler Thursday for safekeeping during an evacuation of the zoo.
